Republican mayoral candidate Sam Katz captured a prize from organized labor yesterday with the endorsement of Teamsters Joint Council 53, representing 60,000 workers.
It is the second major union endorsement for Katz - he was backed recently by city firefighters - in his rematch with Mayor Street. In 1999, Katz had no union endorsements. The Teamsters, who supported Democratic Gov. Rendell last year, did not endorse either candidate in the mayor's race four years ago.
"We're looking to do the right thing for our members - protect jobs and bring more jobs into this city," said Frank Gillen, president of the group, at a news conference at the Food Distribution Center in South Philadelphia. The center is considering relocating to New Jersey.
"This union has done a bold thing in endorsing me," Katz said.
Maybe the voters of Phila. will get some brains and take out the Street garbage.
