I think that we're unlikely to engage any other nations pre-emptively. Perhaps Bush blames this on PNAC and won't listen to them anymore. It's clear they did one hell of a job polishing this turd of an idea (occupying Iraq without having committments from allies first).

why do they release the text of these speeches in advance, don't they know the media will just edit and cut it up and trash it before he actually delivers it?

This isn't a text release; these are intentional leaks by the White House. Don't assume this article tells the whole story.

Just watch what gets in the SC-approved resolution. Don't base your expectations on this speech.

people are not reading the whole article and France knows there is a fine line between gloating and being looked upon as an obstruction. They won't and Bush will not just give in to France/UN just like that.

One would hope so. However considering how infested this administration is with PNAC lackeys, it's going to be quite a different look if all of them were suddenly quiet and not giving the 'informative' press conferences. I mean we're talking about the majority of people the public has seen from this administration. Perle, Wolfowitz, Cheney, and Rumsfeld just to name a few..

It's clear they did one hell of a job polishing this turd of an idea (occupying Iraq without having committments from allies first).

Part of that 'spreading democracy' line from their main page I guess. Bet you won't see that line used anymore

I'm referring to stories that the U.S. is asking the U.N. for a new resolution authorizing troops from other countries, I.E. france, to go into Iraq. I characterize that as begging.

It's more explicit than that. U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte welcomed the "good discussion" at the meeting and stressed the U.S. proposal was only a "working draft." Translation: France will be writing the resolution. Read on-record quotes from that meeting-- it's like they had been singing "What the world needs now is love, sweet love..." Anytime these rat bastards are happy-- it's not a good sign for us. Bank that.

"The most responsible and politically palatable option is the one Bush is following-- eating humble pie and getting the support of the French. Vive la France?!

Then I hope I'm wrong and this solution stabilizes the situation in Iraq. But how long will it take to hammer out another resolution, and who will foot the bill? We where going to pay Turkey $14 billion just to stage troops from their country. How much will it cost us to actually get troops from those countries? We'll probably wind up paying for the whole thing, as well as eating crow. We could do better with our own reservists or troops from Germany.

One of the things that amuses me the most is to watch some Freepers say that we are going hat in hand to the French.

If you will recall, a couple of days ago, Putin signed Russia on board. This isolates France, as China is interested in making nice with us, while Britain is a cosponsor. The French have a choice: let the Russians get in on the ground floor first or join in and have a chance to make some money off the deal.

Which is what this is really all about. The French, the Germans, and the Russians opposed this war because they had a comfy financial arrangement with Saddam. It had nothing to do with principle. Now the Russians see a chance to turn a buck. The French will soon follow.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

We have resources to engage in pre-emptive war-- just not pre-emptive liberation/occupation.

Ok, but as long as Bush doesn't give the UN more than minor concessions,

It's best to lower your expectations now.

Read the reports from the meetings on our "draft" resolution which was immediately dismissed by France and the rest. We acted like they'd done us a favor by dismissing our resolution. "Thank you. May I have another?"

If Bush's upcoming speech indicates anything, you can't do one without the other.

Once the UN approves of the post-OIF operations, they will help foot the bill. It's how it works. It's partially why we wanted UN help at the start. Bush is concerned about the politics of the deficit. Furthermore, he'd rather give a $400B prescription drug benefit than spend that money to pay for OIF and the occupation.

Arabs tried to kill 50,000 Americans. Bush hasn't even whacked 10,000 yet. The Arabs don't fear another attack on the US as much as we do. They didn't pay a high enough penalty. We didn't even flattten Baghdad. What is there for the Arabs to fear?

This "reasonable, proportionate" response we have seen is something I expect from a Democrat wuss. President Bush has disappointed me, and I don't believe we are any less likely to be attacked because it is known our response is going to be "reasonable".

Arabs will not even stop teaching hate until they fear an attack on us, and our response, holding the Arab world responsible for the loonies they send to the US. The only thing that will stop the Islamofaciscits Arabs is real shock tactics. Israel now suffers from the same problem. They've become to tame and civilized. They used to be much more feared. That's my opinion.

Chris, we've already agreed to change that resolution to pacify France and others on the SC. Negropointe called it merely a working draft-- just something to toss on the table and chat about, and not as our serious and unchangeable position. Powell has said we are happy to "adjust and adapt" the resolution to get the support we desire.

You are totally right about the motives of our enemies in the SC. However, they didn't come to us. We came to them. We are the suitor and they are the pretty girl we want to take to prom. "Will you buy me a corsage?" "Why, yes." "Will you take me to dinner?" "Why, yes." "Will you rent a limo?" "Why, yes." "Will you pay for the dress?" "Why, yes."

Here's a fun fact for you: If you do a Google search for "OIF", the first hit you get is "Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation".

How about that?

Can you say another Jimmy Carter? I feel the humiliation coming on. If he's going to act like internationalist Howard Dean, and beg the Franco-Germans,what makes him think people won't pick the real Howard Dean on election day?
