Student wants Scouts off campus

VINELAND -- When Kyle Brandon arrived for classes at Cumberland County College one night last spring, he didn't expect to come face to face with dozens of members of the Boy Scouts of America. But that's what happened when Brandon, a 36-year-old openly gay Vineland resident, walked into the college's Frank Guaracini Jr. Fine and Performing Arts Center.

The stress of witnessing the start of a Boy Scouts award ceremony for the college's president, Kenneth Ender, was so intense that he broke out in cold sweat, Brandon said.

Can you say drama queen? I thought you could.

"The (U.S.) Supreme Court said the Boy Scouts have the right to discriminate," Brandon said.

Everyone has the right to discriminate. Everyone has the need to discriminate. Everyone has the obligation to discriminate. The issue here was, is discriminating against allowing people to join the BSA on the basis of avowing a homosexual orientation is legal. The Supreme Court says it is.

"But that doesn't mean an institution that receives state and federal funding should open their doors to them."

Can someone help me out as to whether the rider in "No Child Left Behind" about the BSA means that this school can't discriminate against the BSA?

Brandon's reaction took Ender by surprise.

Yeah, he probably mistakenly thought that someone who could get into college was intelligent, and someone 36 years old wouldn't get stressed out seeing the BSA give him an award.

The former Eagle Scout said he never thought the award ceremony by the organization's Southern New Jersey Council would tap into a national controversy.

From this I'd guess that President Ender was getting a "Distinguished Eagle Award", an award that the BSA gives Eagle Scouts that have distinguished themselves in business/academia/arts and public service. You have to be nominated for it, it's not something you yourself can apply for.

Oh, please, please take the BSA to court on this one. That way, when Mr. Brandon and whatever advocacy group gets slapped down, no one else will be able to get the support to file such a suit.

This sounds like his own problem, not society's. I suggest therapy to get over this hetero-phobia.

I am sick of this sensitivity, political correctness.I have never wanted to hurt or embarrass or harrass but the demands for "understanding" have strained my "niceness" to the max.

I'll bet I know why he broke out in a sweat when he saw all the young boys. I'll bet it had nothing to do with the awards ceremony.

"Brandon also questions how Ender can justify his decision to accept an award on campus from an organization that discriminates against some members of society when the college has diversity and nondiscrimination policies in place."

Maybe there is something to that "slippery slope" argument.

just because 1 gay boy is offended doesn't mean the good work of the Scouts should be thrown off campus.....In New York they slove the problem differently....the gay boy just goes "away"

In the coming months, Ender said, he wants to foster the debate on the Boy Scouts' policies and whether those rules preclude the organization from use of the college's facilities. "At some point, I have to address the Board (of Trustees) on how to handle this student's complaint

To which the his answer should be; You have learned a valuable lesson today in tolerance. Even though you dislike the BSA position regarding social deviants such as yourself they have as much right to be here as you queers do. So please stop being such a drama queen and go back to class you freaking rump wrangling weirdo.
