California Decides 2003 “Voice Your Choice” Debate

Overview: A 90-minute debate, sponsored by the California Broadcasters Association (CBA) and California State University, will provide viewers and listeners with an opportunity to educate themselves about the recall election, the candidates running for governor, and critical issues affecting the state. The statewide debate, available to all radio and television stations, will give California voters one of the few, if not the only chance, to see and hear the candidates in a live, unfiltered format. The debate will be available in Spanish and closed captioned.

When: Wednesday, September 17th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. (PDT)

Where: The debate will be held on the campus at the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS).

Criteria: On Wednesday, August 13th, the Secretary of State announced the certification of 135 gubernatorial candidates to appear on the October 7th ballot. Since producing a debate featuring all of the certified candidates is unrealistic, CBA will recommend inviting candidates who have a reasonable chance of winning.

Any candidate receiving at least 10% support in the Field Poll, the Public Policy Institute of California poll or the Los Angeles Times poll prior to September 5th will be invited to participate in the statewide debate. If a total of six (6) candidates do not meet this criteria, an independent poll conducted by the California State University will survey undecided voters to determine which of the remaining candidates -- those who polled between 5% and 10% -- are preferred to participate in the debate. Qualifying candidates will be announced by CBA on September 8th.

Format: For this election cycle, the CBA will break the pattern of the past to introduce a new format and structure for the special election debate -- one that will forgo the traditional podium debate scenario and present viewers with a “conversational give & take” roundtable environment. The debate will be composed of six candidates and one moderator.

CBA will also offer a new process for the selection of questions to be answered by the candidates participating in the debate. California voters will have the opportunity to submit public policy questions on postcards to: CALIFORNIA DECIDES 2003, 915 L Street #C440, Sacramento, CA 95814. Voters whose questions are selected will be videotaped in their hometown prior to the debate with the questions being featured during the live debate. The selected questions will be provided to the candidates and the public in advance to maximize interest.

How many debates did the press facilitate last year between Davis and Simon? I just find this desire by the media to facilitate debates to be downright hilarious. If Davis and Co. were ahead right now, there wouldn't be one debate.

According to the San Diego Tribune, Davis was quoted that he was planning for this evening, at KNSD, Channel 7/39 in San Diego a town-hall-style type meeting. Do you know if Davis will in fact be in San Diego and if any type of "Dump Davis" rally is planned.

I saw some other thread either yesterday or today that said he would be at San Diego High School for something like school funding or building more schools.

I don't know of any rally, though.

One. It was an hourlong debate in the middle of the day in the middle of the week -- 1 or 2PM on a Wednesday last Fall. Only Simon and Davis were allowed to debate, and Camejo was excluded from even being part of Simon's audience.

Davis is in deep trouble now, and the "debate" gives him positive exposure -- with uninterrupted media coverage -- to present himself as a governor. Still, those polls last month showed most people are pretty much certain whether or not they'll recall Davis, even if those people aren't so sure of their replacement choice.
