A Berkeley High School teacher arrested in a prostitution sting says that her sex life should have nothing to do with her teaching career. ``As a feminist I believe in every woman's right to self-determination, and that includes sexually and economically,'' said Shannon Williams, 37, who worked with students in the school's independent studies program. Williams, who taught biology and environmental science for several years before becoming a field-trip coordinator last year, was arrested by police two weeks ago in an Oakland apartment. Police said she agreed to have sex with an undercover cop for $250 an hour to supplement her meager teacher's salary. In an interview Tuesday, Williams said she never made jokes about her salary; that was the police. More to the point, she said, she doesn't believe there's anything wrong with a woman choosing to provide sex for money. ``I feel like a gay teacher must have felt 20 years ago after being outed,'' she said. ``I feel that prostitution laws are dinosaurs. That they're similar to sodomy laws, and they will eventually be repealed.'' Sodomy laws were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in June. She may strike a plea bargain during a court appearance this morning, according to her attorney and prosecutors. The standard practice in such cases is a $100 fine and a misdemeanor guilty plea to either prostitution or disturbing the peace, according to defense attorney Katya Komisaruk and Deputy District Attorney Georgia Santos. Supporters will hold a rally outside the courthouse in defense of prostitution, Komisaruk said. Williams said she told school officials in June, before her arrest, that she would take a year off from her school career. Berkeley Unified School District spokesman Mark Copland said that, in general terms, employees who are arrested but not convicted of a crime may return to work. A prostitution conviction would probably be cause for a review, he said. Williams said she was born in San Diego and grew up in San Francisco and Los Angeles. She had worked in group homes for children before entering teaching a decade ago through the Teach for America program. After receiving emergency credentials, she taught in a low-income district in New York. At Berkeley High, independent-studies students go to school once a week to meet with their teachers, Williams said. The students have ranged from Olympic skaters to teen moms, she said. Eight to 10 police officers filled her apartment for her arrest and refused to let her get dressed, she said. She told them she was a schoolteacher. ``I felt they were looking at me like an animal or something. I had this real desire to tell them `I'm not who you think I am. I'm a person with dignity and pride.' ''

Actually, NOW's original position on prostitution was pro-legalization.

Sounds like just the right occupation for her to me.

This is just the logical extention of feminism in general. Feminism was, is, and always will be about self-willed women doing as they please, without regard to morality, traditional societal norms or the welfare of others. Why the school board hasn't just fired this twit is beyond me. What kind of example is she for her young female students, and what kind of temptations will she lead her young male students into?
And her dignity and pride are available for $250 an hour, apparently.
All in all she's not the worst looking prostitute I've seen.
Who wants to bet that she has a drug habit?
That's fine but presently shi is breaking the law. If she believes so strongly, she should work to change the laws so that prostitution is legal. That's the way our system works.
In the meantime, as a feminist, I'd be working to make the transaction illegal for both parties, with equal penalties for both prostitute and client. At present, prostitution laws in most jurisdictions are discriminatory and sexist in favor of men.
Furthermore, it if she is fired for being a prostitute, she should demand that any teacher who purchases sex from a prostitute should be fired as well.
If we're going to have morality laws, let's make sure they apply equally to everyone. Presently, they don't.
I feel the same way about laws that say we can't shoot Democrats. However, you won't find me shooting any until it becomes legal...
Is this the going rate?
Shoot if he'd put on a uniform he could get it for free... lol
Is this the going rate?
That was the price for a private lapdance at the VIP room last time I went to nude bar, and it was "legal," since the club owner tips the cops accordingly.
She must coordinate some interesting "field trips".
