Well, we still seem to have a job market dominated by job postings for call center workers right here in the U.S. as well. Seems this too is hateful work that most Americans don't want to do.

And a lot of the ones who do want to do it (and are doing it) are clueless, rude, and have appalling speech habits.

I used to be in the staffing industry, and call center staffing has got to be one of the toughest things out there. I'm not surprised that they are going overseas. Turnover here in that environment is ridiculous.

It's not fun work, and most people use it as a fill-in occupation until they find something else.

I think it's good they are migrating these jobs. Once the national do not call list is implemented they won't be able to use them anymore and it will be easier to fire these jerks. Candy the lieing marketer, good bye!

I have been reading stories about the lying these people do and it is amusing. These Indian call center workers come up with detailed "american" backgrounds, so people won't be offended at the outsourcing of the reps.

They actually watch american tv shows for research, pretend they are from Brooklyn, and have pet dogs, with american names. It's kinda cute in a pathetic, what will ya do for $170 a month salary kinda way.

I know a few people inIT that would love to have these jobs, with the way the job market is going they will take nearly anything.

I've had mixed results with my call center in India.

We were able to make sales OK. Surprisingly, if you interview carefully, you can find Indian guys and gals who are very good, and can close a lot of sales. We almost got up to the US rate.

The main problem was getting ripped off by American companies who offered one-sided contracts. They transfer all the risk of the sale to the vendor, and then give you garbage prospect lists.

So now we're looking for support and survey contracts rather than sales. We've gotten a few, but business is slow.

We have about 75 employees in a building near Mumbai, and another 20 in Chenai answering emails.

I'm fairly sure most major metropolitan areas have call centers looking for people. If they really want to do it, they should be able to find it. If they are good at it, they may even be able to make decent money. But Lord, it is hellish work, in my opinion.

If they will lie to customers about their identity, they will lie to you about anything.

Isn't faking their background and location deceptive and illegal?

If you ask them outright where they are located are they required to answer honestly or are they encouraged to lie by their employers?

I imagine they are not bound by American laws. I bet they can say anything they want.

"I imagine they are not bound by American laws. I bet they can say anything they want."

It would seem to me that if they are doing business as or
representing themselves as an American company they would be bound by the laws of the USA. I am probably wrong here.

Their speech is undoubtedly easier to understand than that of the mumblers from call centers in the deep south (US).

I recently had to call ALL of my present and past credit card companies on an unpleasant matter. On some of the calls I was helped by people I was almost certain were in India.

One had a pleasant English accent but with a halting delivery that suggested English was not her first language.

Another's delivery was actually difficult for me to follow. While the words were technically correct, the emphasis on some words and tone were a giveaway that this was someone not born in the US. Plus, the words were hard to discern so I had to ask her to repeat several statements two or three times. Since our conversation was difficult, I called back to another operator.

So, in two cases, one handled the job well and the other was not so good. One of the vendors was ironically "American" Express, the other I don't remember.

Hello call center in India?

Please ship me 20,000 of your cows to Nottoocooked, Texas for our Bar-B-Q this Labor Day for our annual holiday slaughter and eat fest.

These cows will be treated with the upmost dignity and kindenss as we shove their flanks on the grill. We promise to only use vegetarian rubs and sauces in the cooking process as required in your country.

No one will disrespect your "gods" but will surely enjoy your help in the U.S.'s effort to keep the world economy humming.
