At 9:30 p.m. on August 12, 1986, a cloudy mixture of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water droplets rose violently from Lake Nyos, Cameroon. As the lethal mist swept down adjacent valleys, it killed over 1700 people, thousands of cattle, and many more birds and animals. Local villagers attributed the catastrophe to the wrath of a spirit woman of local folklore who inhabits the lakes and rivers. Scientists, on the other hand, were initially puzzled by the root cause, and by the abrupt onset, of this mysterious and tragic event.

Didn't it actually happen twice at the same place? That's what I seem to recall.

The French have devised a method and are presently venting this gas from the bottom of these lakes...it should not accumulate again and cause this problem

You ever inhale pure CO2??

I have. Pure CO2 is poisonous and it hurts. I'll give you an idea of what it feels like...

You know that feeling when the fizz of a soda pop goes up your nose? Now immagine that feeling going all the way down your throat and also into into your lungs! THat's exactly what it's like to inhale pure CO2.
