CIA Knew of Hijacker's Plan to Get Pilot License [while Clinton slept]

Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. intelligence knew 20 months before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. that one of the future hijackers was planning to get a pilot's license in Florida, the German magazine Stern said.

The CIA learned in January 2000 from Dubai authorities that Ziad Jarrah, the Lebanese who flew the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, was going to apply for a U.S. visa and take flying lessons in Florida, Stern said in a preview of tomorrow's edition, citing U.S. intelligence documents. A total of four airliners were hijacked and crashed on Sept. 11, 2001.

Authorities questioned Jarrah at Dubai International Airport where he boarded a flight to his home in Hamburg, when he was returning from an al-Qaeda terror network training camp in Afghanistan. Dubai sent transcripts of the interview with Jarrah to the CIA, Stern said.

German intelligence told the CIA about the suspected terrorist links of Marwan al-Shehhi, a second hijacker, more than two years before he flew one of the two planes that crashed into New York's World Trade Center, Stern reported last week.
