Davis' support plunges:
Nearly 6 in 10 likely voters back his recall, a poll finds

Sacramento Bee ^ | August 15, 2003 | Gary Delsohn
Posted on 08/15/2003 7:01 AM PDT by Cultural Jihad

By Gary Delsohn -- Bee Capitol Bureau

Gov. Gray Davis is now less popular in California than Richard Nixon was during Watergate, and nearly six in 10 of those likely to go to the polls Oct. 7 said they'll vote to recall him.

A Field Poll released Thursday showed that support for recalling the Democratic governor is growing -- up seven points from just a month ago -- and more than four in 10 voters think he should resign.

Davis is so unpopular and beleaguered, the poll found, that almost seven of 10 likely voters believe Davis will be recalled.

California Democrats Give Davis Two Weeks (re: New Statewide Field Poll)

FOXnews.com ^ | August 15, 2003 | Major Garrett
Posted on 08/15/2003 6:18 AM PDT by veronica

Top Democratic strategists told Fox News on Thursday that a new statewide Field Poll to be released Friday will show that 58 percent of Californian voters now favor recalling Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, a seven point increase over the last Field Poll in July.

The news sent Democrats across the state into panic and deepened disillusionment with Davis' continued demands that party donors and special interest groups stick with him in his drive to defeat the Oct. 7 recall.

California: GOP presses actor's rivals to quit. Leaders trying to clear field for Schwarzenegger

San Francisco Chronicle ^ | August 15, 2003 | Carla Marinucci, John Wildermuth
Posted on 08/15/2003 6:57 AM PDT by John Jorsett

San Diego -- GOP leaders are working overtime to persuade Republicans Bill Simon, Tom McClintock and Peter Ueberroth to drop out of the recall race to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, clearing the field for action movie superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Sean Walsh, a spokesman for the actor, said the conversations were occurring, though he denied that Schwarzenegger's campaign was involved.

California: Field Poll on recall: The New Nixon

Dan Weintraub weblog ^ | August 15, 2003 | Dan Weintraub
Posted on 08/15/2003 7:07 AM PDT by John Jorsett

The first public poll since the recall campaign began is out, and for Gray Davis, the news is terrible. The Field Poll says the recall is ahead 58-37 among likely voters and 57-34 among all registered voters. The 21-point bulge among likely voters compares to an 8-point margin in favor of the recall just one month ago. This is the most humiliating published poll in the history of California governors. Davis is trailing, and trailing badly, among almost all demographic groups. And people don’t just dislike his policies and his performance. They dislike him personally. The details:

Arnold Walks on Water

California Political Review ^ | August 15, 2003 | Frank Duclos
Posted on 08/15/2003 7:12 AM PDT by ElkGroveDan

I feel ashamed. In the days following Arnold Schwarzenegger’s entry into the race to replace Gov. Gray Davis, I criticized him on talk radio, letters to the editor, and the Internet. But then I received a response on a bulletin board:

Arnold transcends partisan politics. He is the only Republican that can win without automatically getting recalled himself and creating long-term animosity towards Republicans in this highly Democratic state. And he is the only candidate who can bring the state together and heal the political rift after the recall.

CA: 9 GOP reps back Schwarzenegger

Sac Bee ^ | 8/15/03 | David Whitney
Posted on 08/15/2003 8:57 AM PDT by NormsRevenge

WASHINGTON -- Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has yet to define what he stands for in his fledgling campaign to become California's next governor, if the current one is recalled in the Oct. 7 special election.

The fact that the Austrian-born actor's views are largely unknown, however, doesn't seem to be a problem for Republican House members from the state who, one by one, are lining up behind Schwarzenegger week-old campaign.

So far, nine of the state's 20 Republican House members have endorsed Schwarzenegger. Perhaps more telling is the fact that Schwarzenegger is the only candidate to replace Gov. Gray Davis who is garnering any support among the Republican congressional delegation.

Last year's Republican gubernatorial nominee, Bill Simon, has yet to get a single congressional endorsement. And while state Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Simi Valley, has the kind of conservative credentials that might appeal to some of the more conservative members of the delegation, none has endorsed him, either.
