Arnie wife adds key muscle to campaign

Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife, Maria Shriver, is emerging as a key force in his attempt to become Republican governor of California.

Miss Shriver, 47, an experienced news reporter who has worked for national television networks, has assumed a central place in her husband's campaign team. With the Republicans divided among several candidates, her support is seen as becoming an important factor.

She has already made plain that she was unhappy with a decision to book him on a series of national breakfast shows for which he had to get up at 4am and field questions with little sleep.

He had to pretend there was something wrong with the sound when asked about his finances, and when questioned about his view of same-sex marriage, he blurted out that people would have to wait for his positions to be announced.

Miss Shriver felt that he was leaving an opening for critics to say he was ill-prepared.

As a result, she helped organise a shake-up in his campaign team. The leading adviser, George Gorton, who has spent more than a year helping Schwarzenegger position himself for a run, has been given a more limited, political role.

Bob White, who was the staff chief for a former Californian Republican governor, Pete Wilson, has been brought in as the leading strategist.

Miss Shriver is a niece of the late President John Kennedy, but has not won support for her husband from the Democratic Kennedy clan - perhaps unsurprisingly, given that he is trying to unseat a sitting Democratic governor, Gray Davis, in October's poll.

Ms Shriver is also thought to be behind the appointment of a billionaire investor, Warren Buffet, as Schwarzenegger's senior economics adviser. He is seen as giving weight to the campaign.

You mean this question has to be asked? H*** just ask all those Knee Pad conservatives out there they'll tell you how great he is.

They now believe Gay rights, same sex marriage, gun control, gay rights, affirmatinve action is all OK NOW! They will never again pick on Barney and the rest of the Liberals who all support these fine programs. No Shame.

The only way for a Conservative to win in Ca is for a Liberal to run as one..

Arnold started out as a real libertarian only to pulled to the darkside by the Shriver clan. Is it a coincidence that as his biceps got smaller, so did his committment to economic liberty.

I guess she thinks the gov of kali never has to respond to an emergency or something and always gets to sleep in.

Interesting strategy employed by Arnie. Just be as vague as possible and see if you get elected. Hey, it might work.

I was for Arnold until I heard of the Warren Buffett appointment.

Bad choice.
