This Conservative Is Voting For Arnold (Hugh Hewitt Alert!)

THE VOICE OF REASON HUGH HEWITT

This Conservative Is Voting For Arnold

Last week Arnold declared his candidacy for governor of California. I was broadcasting at the time, immediately endorsed him, and immediately began to receive a steady flow of mail from Tom McClintock and Bill Simon fans. Tom and Bill are fine guys, and both have been my guests on countless occasions. I endorsed Bill over Dick Riordan last March and stand by that choice. When it comes to elections, I am a single-issue voter: I support the most conservative candidate who has the most realistic chance of winning.

Field poll silent on California recall. Planned silence?

Posted on 08/12/2003 1:08 PM PDT by Dane

It has been almost a week since Arnold announced that he entered the California Gubernatorial recall and nada from the polls of all polls about California politics( the Field Poll, or so as I have read from the Califonia media).

Why the silence?

Why I'm Voting For Arnold Schwarzenegger (Another Conservative Backs Arnold)

Townhall.com ^ | 8/13/03 | Ben Shapiro
Posted on 08/12/2003 11:59 PM PDT by goldstategop

Conservatives are upset with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Cal Thomas writes that Arnold "is a social liberal and is bound to disappoint conservative Republicans." George Will states that Schwarzenegger "could hardly be less like Reagan." Mona Charen derides the leading candidate for California governor as a Ross Perot clone.

Thomas, Will and Charen are right. But I'm voting for Arnold anyway.

Its a matter of priorities. The real question do we want to stop the Democrats or let them continue to inflict needless damage upon California? That's the way we should look at the situation.

Davis campaign strategy is to run outside recall circus

SFGate ^ | 8.12.2003 | TOM CHORNEAU, Associated Press
Posted on 08/13/2003 1:29 AM PDT by DoctorZIn

Although past races have earned Gov. Gray Davis his reputation as an aggressive campaigner, advisers say he'll fight the recall election with a strategy based on trying to fly above the circus swirling below.

I would like to see a debate between any of the Republicans and Bustamante. Just think of the questions that could be asked of Bustamante, such as "what would you do differently than Davis if you had been in his shoes in the last couple of years?" No Democrat, and in particular Bustamante, can afford to be asked this kind of question in a public debate, so it should be safe and profitable for Republicans to challenge Bustamante and then use his non-response as evidence that Bustamante can not defend his candidacy.

But before Republicans do that, they should really get together and unify behind a single candidate. This seems obvious, but we *are* talking about California Republican candidates for public office, so the obvious is sometimes lost in the heat of headstrong egotism...

I thought that KFI (at least, I think it is KFI) has a good idea when it started to advertise a radio call-in contest to roll back the vehicle tax increase. This is another area where there is no safe position to hold for a Democratic candidate. Bustamante says he will get rid of the vehicle tax increase. I am sure that a lot of liberal Californians will believe him, and then forgive him if and when he gets elected and subsequently changes his mind and goes back to tax-and-spend mode. It is amazing that liberal Californians have been boxed by the recession and Prop 13 to support one of the most regressive tax increases in modern history. But we *are* talking about California liberals, so apparently *any* tax is a *good* tax.

It should be interesting to witness the *second* recall, when Arnold can't find any programs to cut which do not affect children in some way or another. So far, it sounds as if Arnold puts his liberal social values ahead of his fiscal common sense. He, and the rest of California, can't have it both ways...

Davis to Californians: I Feel Your Pain

NewsMax.com ^ | 8/13/03 | Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

California Governor Gray Davis has apparently taken the political advice of ex-President Bill Clinton to heart - so much so that he's begun to mimic Clinton's lip-biting catch phrase, "I feel your pain" in a desperate bid to survive October's recall vote.

A total deterioration of leadership (Rush)

So, Californians are going to decide whether to remove their hapless governor, Gray Davis, in a recall vote and elect a new one. The big date is Oct. 7, and the liberal elitists are shaking in their Ferragamo shoes.

Can Schwarzenegger be stopped by Davis?

Mercury News ^ | 8/13/03 | Dan Walters - Sac Bee
Posted on 08/13/2003 6:00 AM PDT by NormsRevenge

With his magnetic personality, his glamorous aura and his willingness to spend millions of his own dollars, Arnold Schwarzenegger could simply suck all of the oxygen out of the arena, leaving Gray Davis and other would-be successors gasping for breath, unable to gain any attention from media or voters.

Does that mean Schwarzenegger's ascendancy to the governorship is inevitable? No.

You couldn’t make this stuff up. The lead Republican contender to become governor of California, should the effort to recall Democratic Governor Gray Davis succeed, is a muscle-bound movie star with a spurious education, flimsy command of English and no political experience whatsoever.

In the California Recall Mess, Democrats See National Message

The Wall Street Journal ^ | Wednesday, August 13, 2003 | GERALD F. SEIB

Arnold Schwarzenegger is even stronger than most people thought. It turns out he can suck all the oxygen right out of the rest of the political world, seizing the attention, and maybe even diverting the dollars, that other candidates crave.

I gotta ask...do you ever get "confused" between the Iran and the California threads?..there's a certain elegant symmetry at work, no doubt, but if you ever e-mail your friends in Iran the wrong links..well they might thing that U*ncle Sam is sending the Terminator over to Tehran....
