Headline: Influx of al-Qaeda allies feared in Iraq -- Detail Story

WASHINGTON: Some US officials and terrorism specialists expressed apprehensions of influx of the militants sympathetic to and possibly allied with Osama bin Laden in Iraq in the same way as they had flooded into Afghanistan in the 1980s to fight the Soviet occupation there, a US daily reported on Sunday.

That Afghan war became known as the Soviet Union's Vietnam and radicalized a generation of Arab fighters, including bin Laden and his Al Qaeda network.

In Iraq, even before the United States invaded and occupied the country, fighters from several Arab and non-Arab countries had infiltrated in the hope of waging a guerrilla war against Western occupying forces, according to US officials.

Investigators suspect that such foreign militants -- possibly from the group Ansar al-Islam, which has been linked to Al Qaeda -- may have been behind Thursday's bombing outside the Jordanian Embassy in Baghdad, although they said they could not rule out disgruntled members of Iraq's Ba'ath Party, US officials said. The death toll from the attack was raised to 19 yesterday.

Analysts outside the government see these combatants as important factors in the Iraq equation. That's going to be a continuing source of instability,' said Vincent Cannistraro, former counter terrorism chief for the CIA. Even if we catch Saddam tomorrow, that doesn't mean the resistance is going to go away, he said.

Defense officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the United States is holding several hundred foreign fighters captured in Iraq, the majority of them Syrians. Others include Saudis, Sudanese, Egyptians, Yemenis, Moroccans, and Albanians, according to US government officials and terrorism specialists.

According to a foreign policy analyst who is in frequent contact with US officials in Baghdad, the belief on the ground is that radical foreign Islamists -- perhaps members of Al Qaeda, or members of other international terror groups -- are playing a significant role in the continuing turmoil, alongside former Ba'athists loyal to Hussein. The analyst spoke on condition of anonymity.

ASSIST NEWS.net: "DON'T MESS WITH THIS AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE! by Jeremy Reynalds (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Mrs. Galt reports to freelance undercover investigator Glen Jenvey, whose story of putting Al Qaeda recruitment videos on the web I first told to the world (www.assistnews.net/Stories/s02110035.htm) in November 2002 (when Jenvey was using the assumed name of Albert). His story was also reported recently by the London"Sunday Times." Mrs. Galt's latest assignment has been penetrating Al Qaeda related groups in Pakistan. That work may well have resulted in the imprisonment and maybe even death of a number of terrorists. Because other alleged terrorists with whom Mrs. Galt has dealt are still at large, her name and location are not being disclosed and she will not talk directly to the media. However, Jenvey was willing to do so and in a recent e-mail interview with this reporter told how he and Mrs. Galt began infiltrating alleged terrorist groups in Pakistan. Jenvey said after successfully working with India's military intelligence in another project and learning about a group whose members bombed an Indian temple, he met with senior intelligence officials from India. That meeting, Jenvey said, "led Indian (intelligence) to a big load of Al Qaeda supporting Pakistani based Kashmir terrorists that were even at one point talking about 9-11 mastermind Osama bin Laden." Jenvey said after forwarding the information Mrs. Galt continued to gather in on-line discussions with alleged Pakistani terrorists to the FBI via the American Embassy in London and Britain's MI5, he saw some remarkable things happen." So who didn't know this? That's what I figured would happen all along, and I'm sure the Bush administration did too. The only thing is, it won't be like Afghanistan because 1) the terrain doesn't lead itself to the same kind of war and 2) the Iraqi people won't want them there. They are dead meat.

The problem is the Admin is holding back so much info. Not info that will save lives or protect intel assets but on who we fight and in what quantity. What nations do the recruits come? Is the fact that Albainians we championed are shooting at us? Saudis? Pakis? Tell us! Don't baby us anymore.

I guess the justification of not informing us these details is to protect the existing diplomacy with these nations that provide the jihad fodder against American outrage that would follow and thus complicate State's job.

No, the justification is that if you inform us, you are also informing the terrorists. When you're in the middle of a fight it's best to keep mouths shut and just fight. You give out too many clues, you tip your hand.

None of us are going to know for sure just who our friends are or who our enemies are until this is over. There are going to be some pretty BIG surprises.

The terroroists know the ethnic origin of the recruits. So why keep ethnic origins of captured and killed al-Qaeda secret unless it is to protect diplomacy with Crapistan or some such?

Yep, they will get more and more desperate and make more and more mistakes. An Iranian I know in this country is telling folks here at work we are taking massive casualties and they are not being reported, folks are getting notices of demise from unofficial channels. And Iran has no protest, its something we are making up to destabilize God's country as the great satan. God what a crock..He says Jesus is impotent to do anything...I don't know why he can't look at the cesspool he calls God's country and realise, man that sucks the big one. I guess slaves of Allah have no brain or soul. Glad my God isn't Allah.

The muslims are so full of it, their false pride has no end. God doesn't want mankind to be enslaved, or ruled by them because they have ceremonies before their atrocities. I hope one day muslims will have the strength to look in their hearts to seek love, not this bull the mullahs have spewed since getting in with Mohammed the false prophet.

We don't want the terrorists to know what we know. We also don't want our war targets and timing being determined/influenced by public pressure/outrage -- we want our decisions to be purely strategic in nature.

Right on. It's easier when they're all in one place and we happen to have 150,000 troops in that place.
