LOS ANGELES -- Former Republican Congressman Michael Huffington announced Thursday that he will support Arnold Schwarzenegger's bid for governor's office instead of seeking it himself.
Huffington also took the opportunity to take a swipe at his ex-wife, political independent Arianna Huffington, who announced her candidacy Wednesday, portraying herself as an unconventional candidate for unconventional times.
Huffington said, in effect, that he is being responsive to his children's needs while she is not.
"This week my children told me that they did not want their parents to run in this election -- either one of us. In consideration of my two young daughters, I have determined that entering the governor's race would not be in the best interests of my children," he said in a statement.
"Withdrawing from this potential race has been a difficult decision. However, my children come first."
Huffington, who represented the Santa Barbara area while in Congress, also said his candidacy could have weakened the Republican Party's efforts to reclaim California.
"I believe my background in finance, business and philanthropy uniquely qualifies me to help solve California's fiscal crisis," said Huffington, whose last electoral effort ended with Democrat Dianne Feinstein being elected senator.
"That said, the most important goal is that our state has strong, responsible leadership."
He said "many fine Republicans" are considering running in the recall election, but he has decided to support Schwarzenegger.
"Arnold is a charismatic leader who would be able to work with all segments of the California political spectrum and our state needs a uniter right now," Huffington said.

Michael Huffington just made me a fan. He has my deepest sympathies for having been married to Arianna herself.

And having children when you're a homosexual who's going to run out of the marriage to go live with your boyfriend... I'm sure that was really nice for the children too, Mike.

If I were married to Arianna, I'd probably become gay.

It's getting to the point that it is easier to keep up with who isn't running.

Can you imagine how messed up those kids will end up? I figure they will be about as scrambled mentally as Rosie's cash bought children and Madonna's children.

Just for a second while reading your post, I thought, "Mass is wrong -- a man and a woman can't have a cat fight..." Then I snapped to. :-)

Going to be hard for Arianna to continue to run after that, she'd be admitting that she's selfish and a bad mother. LOL, what to do, what to do!

Using the new Post Arnie Announcement landscape to trash your ex as part of the withdrawing of your name process, shows a complete lack of class. I'll leave it at that, except to say that I have very little respect for his wife either.

Simon "I'm for closed borders and no amnesty." On Micheal Savage a few minutes ago.Don't vote for arnold. Will vote for McClintock. Simon had his chance last year, and he failed to win... If he had won, there wouldn't even be a recall election! It's time for Simon to do the right thing -- endorse McClintock. And after the election, maybe Schwarzenegger will have a position for him! :-)

No matter how this turns out, its a joy to see California turned into a three ring circus with every freak scrambling for a tv camera and 65 signatures.
I have this joy not because of the people of California who I feel sorry for. I have this joy because for years I have been told by the press that California is a paradise because of its socialist policies and wise progressives.
For years, the press has held up California as on its way to being a great "progressive" utopia. For years they have sneered at the rest of the country for its "backward" ways. If only we would listen to Berkeley we too could have paradise.
Now the rest of the country can see where "progressive elitism" leads. It leads to Gray Davis, circus clowns, and a breakdown of the system. Yeeeeee ha.
In the word's of a great Eagle's song. "Call someplace paradise..kiss it goodbye".
