Here is a chronology of blasts which have rocked Indonesia in the past three years:
August 5, 2003: A car bomb tears through the luxury American-owned JW Marriott hotel in southern Jakarta, killing at least 10 people.
July 14, 2003: A bomb explodes at Indonesia's parliament building, just days after the arrest of suspects of the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) terror network who are said to be planning attacks.
The blast shatters windows and a door in an office area but no one is hurt.
April 27, 2003: A bomb rips through a restaurant area at Indonesia's main international airport, injuring 11 people. The blast is near a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.
April 24, 2003: A bomb explodes in Central Jakarta behind the United Nations headquarters but no one is hurt.
April 1, 2003: A bomb explodes under a gas pipeline in the Indonesian city of Medan but there are no casualties. The pipeline belongs to state energy giant Pertamina. A second bomb, which failed to explode, is found nearby.
December 5, 2002: A blast at a busy McDonald's outlet and a car showroom in the eastern city of Makassar kills three people and injures 11.
More than 20 people are arrested, with police saying some of them knew those behind the Bali blasts.
October 12, 2002: Blasts at crowded nightspots in the resort island of Bali kill 202 people, mostly foreign holidaymakers. The blast is blamed on JI.
September 23, 2002: A grenade explodes inside a vehicle during an attempted attack on a US embassy residence in Jakarta, killing one of the assailants.
September 5, 2002: Four people, including three teenage girl athletes, are killed in a powerful explosion at a sports stadium in strife-torn Ambon city. Eight other people were also wounded.
July 27, 2002: At least 54 people are injured in a bomb blast in the religiously divided city of Ambon.
June 6, 2002: A bomb rips through a crowded bus and kills four people and injures 17 near Poso in Central Sulawesi, an area plagued by clashes between Muslims and Christians.
February 11, 2002: A grenade explosion in Banda Aceh injures 12 people just two hours before US ambassador Ralph Boyce arrived for a two-day visit.
February 3, 2002: A bomb at Indonesia's national police headquarters causes only one minor injury and little damage. An unidentified policeman with rank of captain is later arrested.
November 6, 2001: A grenade is hurled into the grounds of the Australian International School in Jakarta but no one is injured in the blast.
August 1, 2001: A bomb explodes at a busy commercial centre, the Atrium Mall, in Central Jakarta. Five people are wounded, including the bomber Taufik Abdul Halim, a Malaysian national who loses a leg.
July 22, 2001: At least 64 people are injured after two bomb explosions rock Christian churches in Jakarta.
January 1, 2001: Four churches are bombed simultaneously in the Central Sulawesi capital of Palu as midnight strikes on New Year, shattering church windows and injuring one person.
December 24, 2000: At least nine locations across Indonesia are rocked by explosions on Christmas Eve, leaving 19 people dead and scores wounded.
The devices were delivered to churches and to homes of clergymen disguised as Christmas gifts. More than 100 others were injured in the blasts.
Alleged JI leader Abu Bakar Bashir is accused of authorising the blasts.
September 14, 2000: A bomb at the Jakarta Stock Exchange kills 10 people and injures 46. Two men are jailed for 20 years each.
