[history]
Spc. Shoshanna Johnson took the attention in stride Sunday, chatting with well-wishers who asked her to sign autographs or to pose for photographs.
A 30-year-old cook from El Paso, Texas, Johnson gained unwanted fame when she and seven soldiers in her unit, the 507th Maintenance Company out of Fort Bliss, Texas, were captured March 23 when their convoy was ambushed by Iraqis at Nasiriyah. Ten of her fellow soldiers were killed.

Johnson was named an honorary Buffalo Soldier, part of a historic group of African-American cavalrymen whose regiments were formed by act of Congress 137 years ago todayI served for a short time at Fort Huachuca, AZ, the original home of the Buffalo Soldiers. There is quite a fascinating history behind them.

Ah. Good for her. Some folks in the Lynch thread were worried she wasn't being recognized. Nice to see she got her day in the sun.

Shoshanna Johnson was on a local tv station (I live near Los Angeles). She was being honored for her heroism in a church. After people spoke about her, she said that she was not the hero and the real heroes were the ones who rescued her and those who gave their lives.
What a wonderfully inspiring and humble woman she is!
