Warnings on Saudis 'ignored' From correspondents in Washington

A RETIRED FBI agent has informed a congressional committee probing the September 11 attacks that his superior had ignored his warnings about a flow of Saudi money into the hands of suspected hijackers, US News and World Report magazine reported today.

Steven Butler, who worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI's) San Diego field office, told the committee the money went to two of the September 11 hijackers - Khalid Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi, the magazine reported, quoting unnamed government officials.

In his testimony, Butler described his dealings with a leader in San Diego's Muslim community, a 68-year-old man named Abdussattar Shaikh, who served as an FBI informant, according to US News.

In 2000, Shaikh rented a room in his house in the San Diego suburb of Lemon Grove to Almihdhar and Alhazmi, who later helped hijack American Airlines Flight 77 and crash it into the Pentagon.

According to officials familiar with his account, Butler said that he had alerted his superiors about the money flow but the warning went nowhere, the report said.

The FBI is currently investigating how thousands of dollars of charitable donations from Saudi Princess Haifa Al-Faisal, wife of the Saudi ambassador to the United States, ended up in the hands of Almihdhar and Alhazmi.

The princess has denied any knowledge of these transfers.

The money indirectly went to Saudi nationals Osama Basnan and Omar al-Bayoumi, who lived in the United States and helped Almihdhar and Alhazmi pay their rent.

According to US News, FBI and Treasury Department investigators believe that as much as $US100 million ($A179.05 million) has flowed from Saudi Arabia to terrorist organisations in recent years.

"We're talking about major-league businessmen who have ties to the royal family," the report quotes a senior Treasury official as saying.

"Over the years, they've put funds into a lot of different mechanisms - business charities, moneymaking ventures - and routed them through offshore havens," the official said.

"They distance themselves from the money - it gets washed again and finally disbursed to the bad guys," he added.

Saw this story linked by Shermy on one of his posts linked from the subject of Abdussatar Shaikh, who housed 2 of the hijackers in the US, who has taught on the benefits of integrating Muslims into our society.

Anyone see a more incriminating version of this article?

How long is the US going to treat her as a diplomat and allow her passage in the country?

I believe this evidence was uncovered over a year ago, I think I remember this story posted and the excuse was that she was approached by a group that claimed they were out to help the needy and she had no idea she was funding terrorist. I could be wrong, but you might want to do a google search on this subject

And the ongoing coverup of Saudi treachery continues.

How a totalitarian religious monarchy gets away with the murder of 3000+ Americans.

And why?

With a secret police apparatus virtually second to none, we are expected to believe that the elites of the Tragic Kingdom have been oblivious to the carnage done in the name of their state religion, the wacked out wahhabs.

Even when the trail leads to the wife of the Ambassador to the US, we are expected to believe the poppycock that is shoveled in our faces.

Never mind those two planeloads of Saudi bigwigs taken out the US in the week after 9/11 with the full blessing and encouragement of the administration.

Considering that the Saudi royal family numbers in the thousands, it's hard to point to a Saudi government conspiracy just because a handful of the princes/princesses are found to support terrorists. Whether or not King Fahd approves or even knows about it, he has plausible deniability.

Adbullah is acting king, BTW.

This is an issue of faith. Those who are willing to buy the Suadi line will do so regardless of the facts.

Or in the case of today's reports, no facts.

Amazing, isn't it, the length to which the administration is going to coverup the Saudi role, regardless of the public abuse it has to take over those blank pages.

If the Saudis are such friends, why whiteout 29 pages.

Exactly. Why should the Bush administration get to censor the report or get away with censoring the report? If it was intelligence operations being protected it would be the CIA or FBI censoring the report. Is the media portraying it as the Bush administration censoring the report to make them look bad, or is the Bush administration shielding the Saudis?

Congress is no better. They're basically spineless.

No one in the Senate leaked the 50Page Classfied report shown to them last year. Too bad.
