SARS May Return During Flu Season, Some Experts Say

July 17 (Bloomberg) -- The virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, a disease that killed more than 800 people and infected more than 8,000 worldwide, may return in this year's flu season, according to new survey.

Among the nine public health experts surveyed by the London- based Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, three said SARS may recur, two said SARS would not recur, and four were uncertain, according to an e-mailed statement from the British Medical Association.

The SARS enthusiasts are still rooting for a plague so they can say "I told you so."

The former President disembarks from his airplane after a trip back to Arkansas. Although the hoopla is less now that he is out of office, Clinton still occasionally finds himself greeted by military personnel. This is one such occasion.

He climbs down the stairs, carrying two huge pigs, one under each arm. He gets to the bottom, and nods his head in return to the soldier's salute. "Son, what do you think about these?" he says. "Nice pigs, SIR!" comes the reply. Clinton gets mildly miffed and lectures, "I'll have you know these aren't just pigs but the finest of Arkansas Razorbacks. Top notch. I got one for Hillary, and one for Chelsea. What do you think about that?"

Thanks, Brian, for the ping. I saw the article posted, read it, and read EPU's reply. SARS will either come back this fall, or it won't. Either way, I'm ready.

All the threads during the spring were a real education in what to expect, if it does. Who will get it, how to keep from getting it, what to expect if you get it, the reaction of people to quarantine, the reaction of the politicians, the needs of hospitals, and what the front line is like.

I appreciate everyone who participated in them and shared knowledge...I think it's a model for discussion of potential emerging diseases, not just SARS. And it happened right here on FR.
