The House yesterday passed a bill that seeks to limit fraudulent use of consular I.D. cards, such as the ones Mexico issues, which the FBI has said are unreliable and a threat to U.S. security.

Part of the broader Foreign Operations authorization bill, which passed 382-42, requires Mexico and any other nation that issues cards to its citizens living in the United States to make sure applicants are bona fide citizens of the country, to record information on every card issued and to make the information on recipients, including name and current address, available to U.S. officials.

"While Republicans claim that their focus is broad in nature, this amendment exposes their true colors and sets a dangerous precedent," said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Robert Menendez of New Jersey, the top-ranking Hispanic in Congress. "It is the brainchild of certain Republicans, who obsess over their fear and hatred of the immigrant community late at night on the House floor."

The "immigrant community" is not served by these cards. Those who are here legally have visas and green cards, as is stated in the article. If Representative Menendez really wanted to help the immigrants, I would think he would want the border closed, services stabilized, and jobs filled by unemployed US citizens.

Are there any members of the Hispanic community in Congress who actually represent the US and not Mexico?

Bump! The Democrats attitude seems to be we should accept foreigners have a right to use our government's funds and services at no charge. This while they're seeking to increase the tax burdens of AMERICANS to pay for it. Their chutzpah knows no limits.

Rep. John Hostettler, Indiana Republican and the amendment's sponsor, said the bill does not restrict use of the cards or state and local governments' ability to accept the cards as identification.

This is a transparent dog-and-pony act. The House isn't outlawing the use of the cards, they're attempting to standardize their acceptance.

No where is the recalcitrant lack of leadership of President Bush more evident than on the issue of Illegals. The matricula consular scam has been gaining acceptance among cowardly municipalities, seeking to pander to Hispanics, for the better part of a year.

President Bush has found the time in his busy schedule to expand the welfare state with a Prescription Drug Swindle, and give away billions to Africa, but he can't seem to muster the ethical fortitude to uphold the laws of the United States against Illegal Aliens. Congress is following his lead.

Can anyone possibly be surprised? Bush has never vetoed a single bill. He has always been a spineless panderer on Illegals. Can anyone seriously believe that if this matricula consular legislation lands on his desk, he'll finally tell Congress to pound sand?

If so, I've got some Baja beachfront to sell you.

Standardized acceptance of the matricula consular cards is a back-door Amnesty, on schedule and as predicted. While President Bush and Congress talk amongst themselves about how to sell out this country to Illegals, the citizens of Arizona are sponsoring a Proposition #187-style Protect Arizona NOW referendum, and the Million American March is coming in September of 2004. Next election season, the politicians can run for office, but they won't be able to hide from the anger of the voters on Illegals.

Getting on the wrong side of the Illegal Alien issue is exactly what one would expect of the Stupid Party, especially under the disappointing leadership of President George W. Bush.

Great job.

I was too burnt to read it and was hoping this was a good thing. Oh well.

Thanks.

Their chutzpah knows no limits.

Why should the Democrats hold back?

The GOP is setting the rules of this game, read the article. It's an all-aout sellout by the GOP on Illegals. The difference with the Democrats is only of degree, not in kind. Both parties are attempting to enshrine their brand of Illegal Alien malfeasance into law.

Welcome to Hispandering. It's a bidding war, and the guy who's gonna spend the most of your money to sell you out to the Illegals sits in Washington D.C., in an office without corners.

If they were serious they would ban banks and airlines from accepting them as valid ID's. You're right - this is another scam.

q: Since when is a Democrat AGAINST regulation?
a: When the regulation in question actually HELPS America.

Will anyone have the huevos to ask Senor Menenenenenendez HOW exactly, this is "anti-hispanic" ? Or what he really means by that stupid statement?

Can someone with the resources look up the background of this guy? Which one of his contributors is FOR open fraud and deception? Hmmm... How can anyone possibly be against this? Especially since this is a half-assed attempt? He must be an enemy of America.

The bill also does not specifically apply to Mexico's card, but Mexico is the most prolific issuer of consular cards in the United States, with more than 1.5 million issued. Other nations have said they either will, or want to, issue cards to their own nationals living in the United States.

To address the problem of fraudulent documents, the bill would require Mexico to verify a person's identity through voter registration or birth records.

The bill says countries that fail to follow the requirements for consular cards would be punished by the State Department, which would no longer be able to issue visas to immigrants and visitors from those nations.

Total stealth Amnesty. Called it, back here, three weeks ago...

What do you want to bet that the unreliability of the Mexican IDs becomes a rationale for Amnesty?

"That way, we can seperate the law-abiding Illegals from the terrorists."

How can anyone possibly be against this?

Matricula consular IDs are specifically for Illegals, to enable their colonization of this country. That is their primary purpose and function.

How can any self-respecting American be for that?
