A group of American makers of wood bedroom furniture is preparing to seek protection from the U.S. government to stem a surge of imports from China that the companies say has ravaged their industry.

John Bassett, president and chief executive of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co., Galax, Va., and a spokesman for the group of 14 furniture makers, said the American Furniture Manufacturers Committee for Legal Trade intends to file an antidumping petition this fall with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Like I said Benedict Arnold was well paid for the plans to West Point. Also note my commenst about your support of China. what I can not understand is your claims to be an American, a conservative or a Christian none of that conforms to yoru position.

I'm trying to broaden my education so here we meet on another thread!

Small world. I've got to get to work. . . while I still have a job.

By not accepting our imports, they're just dislocating resources within their own country. That's only hurting their economy in the long run.

But they are developing their industrial base investing capital in their future which is a proven strategy for success. Why buy our imports now when they can take over the entire nation in the future and have it all?

I love it when Republicans and Conservatives denigrate the freemarket. It's like fish in a barrel.

What would YOU do with all the out-of-work factory workers and IT workers in this country. Remember, another 3.3 million jobs are slated to be lost to India in the IT sector in the next ten years or so (according to another article I saw posted here today).

Nothing.

"The Germans do an incredible job of efficiency. Also, the Japanese do.
Americans are know(n) as lazy and innefficient."

Gee, how did we ever beat them in WWII? And, wasn't it nice of us to GIVE them money to rebuild their countries? AND, wasn't it nice of us to rebuild their automotive plants so they could compete with us? We did not even give Detroit money to update their assembly lines.

Gee, do you think they would have done that for us if they had won WWII?

Please, do yourself a favor and emigrate to one of these countries that you so admire.

We are in a rapidly tightening death spiral.

Sweet. Let's have more then. Looks pretty nice from my vantage point.

Me too. I have contracts flying in the door left and right. I've an idea, let's you and me kill all the smelly little people without jobs. We can use them as sporting clays.

I love America. I just hate all my fellow Americans.

I am becomming more and more convinced that Texas_Dawg is not at all what he claims to be. I to not think he is an American. His knowledge of American history is poor to say the least.

Alright... you got me. I work for the King of Liechtenstein in the 7th level below the Pentagon. We run the shadow government that controls you people.

Anyone that has any sense of history and remembers how John D. Rockefeller got rich. Would understand that the Federal government has a respncibilty to protect American industries when they are faced with a JDR type attack. It is a no brainer.

Unions were just as evil then as they are now.

Your knowledge of teh history of unions is very very poor. Trade unions such as the IBEW got their start by being a mutual aid society providing a form of life insurance in what was at the time a very high risk endeavor. I futher note the rail unions at their start promoted what were very efficient industry practices. In the Union wars of the 1800's and early 1900's both sides had much which was hardly on the side of the angels. Your ignorance of history is showing again.

Like I said earlier, what these people are essentially doing is seeing China and other Communist countries shooting themselves in the foot and saying, "Hey! That's not fair! We have to shoot ourselves in the feet too!"

Re post #67:

Once again, you "free traitors" try to falsely portray these jobs as "buggy whip" jobs, meaning they're obsolete. If they're so obsolete, why is there still a market for the product, hmmm? Last I looked, people were still wearing clothes, buying computers and power tools. Are you saying all those things are "butter churns"? Be honest, why can't you, and quit trying to say these are jobs "no American wants" or that these jobs are "obsolete". This obvious intent to mislead is yet ANOTHER reason why I have no respect for "free traitors".

Now since you claim to be a Christian I will also explain that by advocating policies which beggar thy neigbor within the USA you are hardly being a good Christian.

ROTFLMAO, good one! You might want to check with your pastor as to whether the golden rule stops at borders.

Amazing stuff.

Given the internet anyone anyplace can post on Free Republic. i do not know if you are an American citize3n or not I am presuming you are. That factr alone does not confer legitamacy to what you state. benedict Arnold was an American who actually was a hero of the Revolutionary war until he gave the plans of West Point to Major Andre. What you are advocating is not pro American it is pro Chinese and as such questions about your status as an American are very much justified.

Unions were just as evil then as they are now.

More. Most were set up to exclude black workers from the labor pool.

If their products are as lousy as people are claiming they are (I have no knowledge of the Chinese furniture industry), and their industries are being supported by government intervention and protectionism (thereby causing people in their society to pay more for other things than they are worth), they won't be able to invest in their industrial base for long. Eventually, that kind of system has to collapse.
