SQUAMISH -- A camping trip to B.C. by three Washington state residents turned ugly in Squamish last week when they got into a fight with a large group of partying youths.

The RCMP is only now releasing details of the incident.

They say the clash on July 2 began with verbal bantering between Canadians celebrating Canada Day and the Americans marking Independence Day.

The Mounties say the verbal exchanges escalated to physical aggression by both sides, resulting in some injuries and damage to the Americans' vehicle and tent.

According to the victims, the teens threw stones, beat and terrorized them while chanting, "Yankee go home." A local tow truck driver says their vehicle had a broken windshield and slashed tires.

Shannon Stone says the group started swearing at them, and Jay Barklay says they threatened to gang-bang the American tourists.

"I've never been through anything like this," Stone says. "Seeing a whole group of people coming after us. I thought somebody was going to get killed."

But police say their information is that the physical attacks were started by the American campers, and that one of the Americans threatened to come back with a gun.

Two people were arrested for causing a disturbance.

The American campers called the U.S. consulate, which has contacted the RCMP.

The RCMP is still investigating and charges could be laid.

Dear Lord, save this sinful country. The media here seems to think this is no big deal. Imagine the reaction if a Mob of Drunken teenagers surrounded some Chinese tourists screaming, "Chinks go home!"

The official line seems to be that, "it was a fight on both sides and the Americans started it." Well, call by a cynic, but that sounds a lot like lies from the youth that the authorities find convinent to believe.

1) Three middle-aged tourists are unlikely to begin a confrotnation with a drunken teenaged mob. 2) Sides which began a fight rarely end up with their windshield broken and their tires slashed.

God help us. God save Canada. This kind of stuff (not so bad usually) happens all the time. I've had my tires slashed because I had a pro-American bumper sticker and I've had rotten fruit thrown at my house because I have an American flag flying.

Perhaps a boycott of Canada which would hurt their tourist industry might be in order?????

We have always enjoyed visiting Canada especially because it is a bargain due to exchange rate but have now decided to spend our vacation money to the USA!

Adam, let me say that I really appreciate your reporting from north of the border. Sadly, Canada appears to have degenerated into a dreadful EU-style soft totalitarianism. I really hope that there are enough decent and upright folks in the western part of Canada to break off and form their own nation. PC has run amok in Canada, but we're not as far behind here in the USA as some would like to believe. Keep up the good fight, our prayers are with you.

Banff is a great place, glad you're having a good time. So you see this as a case of drunk teens being obnoxious? Unfortunately, that happens everywhere, but the Canadian authorities had better be fair.

Seems you are jumping to some mighty big conclusions here. How do you know these Americans were "middle-aged"? I don't see that anywhere in the article. And even if they were, I've been to enough bars to see middle-aged folk pick fights with younger people. Just because these people were Americans doesn't mean they are tactful people.

They were interviewed on TV (Global BC is a TV station)- I saw the report. They didn't look like very confrontational people.

Sorry, but you can't make a "Canada is going to hell in a handbasket" statement just because some people looked nice on TV. Furthermore, there are plenty of cases where people who start the fight don't finish too well. And how do we know alcohol wasn't being consumed by the Americans?

I don't know with certianty, but I've had enough experience with anti-Americanism to have a pretty good idea of what happened. I, after all, have had my tires slashed for what I am certian was the same reason (my rear tires were slashed at a shopping mall on March 20, 2003- any idea why?).

No I wouldn't know, and I'm sorry it happened to you. Any other kinds of stickers on your car? It may have just been random for all we know. And even if it was inspired by that patriotic sticker on your car...it doesn't necessarly mean that Canada is moving towards anti-patriotism. I've gotten into tiffs with people and on the surface it seemed it arose from my being Asian...but on further reflection, it was just a few a$$holes looking for any excuse to get in trouble...
