Actually, Andy Griffith was Matlock. Buddy was Barnaby Jones. ;^)

Matlock He didn't play Matlock. He played Roy Houston, Matlock "Matt" Houston's uncle in the show "Matt Houston."
Matlock was this whole other show with a different old guy in it :-)

He also played Barnaby in a cameo role in the Beverely Hillbilly's movie. That was a hoot when Jed walked into Barnaby's office and he swung around in his big ol' chair.
