Thomas Sowell is as much of a national, intellectual treasure as Eric Hoffer was in the 60s. In both cases it means here is a well-educated man (Hoffer was a longshoreman who was self-educated, BTW) who understands his times so well that he speaks to and for all times, not just his own.
