Couple wins refund over sad songs played at wedding
China Daily ^ | July 4, 2003

A pair of newlyweds in China have won a refund for their wedding banquet after sad songs were played throughout the festivities.

As the couple toasted their marriage with guests at a restaurant in Keqiao, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, morose Chinese songs including You Took Away My Woman and Why Do You Love Someone Else Secretly were played in the background.

The couple were given an 80 per cent discount on the banquet, which cost 1500 yuan ($270) per table, after they threatened to report the restaurant to the local consumer association, the Hong Kong edition of the China Daily newspaper reported.

I read somewhere that they also played "I used to kiss her lips, but it's all over now" and that every-so-sad "I had a commune up front, and she had a flat behind." How sad!

Ha! When I was in the business of playing weddings, we always threw in "How can I miss you when you won't go away."

They also played that very sad "She kissed him at the Workers Paradise Station as he went off in his uniform." Ever play that one?

No mention of them playing the song for the "chicken dance", a small blessing!

Songs by the 80's group Gang of Four are probably also a bad idea.

We specifically asked our DJ not to play "Friends in low places" (or anything by Garth, especially that one). SOB played it anyway. We think he was drunk. I would have tossed him but after my brand new wife just spent months planning the wedding and reception, I had to let it slide...

We are both country music fans, but any more of Garth, Shania, or the Dixie Chicks and I'll hurl.

Guess there are times when we all need to share a little pain
And ironing out the rough spots
Is the hardest part when memories remain
And it's times like these when we all need to hear the radio
'Cause from the lips of some old singer
We can share the troubles we already know

Turn them on, turn them on
Turn on those sad songs
When all hope is gone
Why don't you tune in and turn them on

They reach into your room
Just feel their gentle touch
When all hope is gone
Sad songs say so much

If someone else is suffering enough to write it down
When every single word makes sense
Then it's easier to have those songs around
The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you
and it feels so good to hurt so bad
And suffer just enough to sing the blues

Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say so much
