History is about to come alive again in Philadelphia. The city, home of the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and many early American historical structures, will soon see the opening on July 4 of the first-ever building dedicated to the United States Constitution.
Designated the National Constitution Center, the new museum is situated as the northern-most anchor of Independence Mall. A modern 160,000 square-foot building, it is filled with more than 100 exhibits designed to increase the public's understanding of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, its history and relevance to our life now.
"It is both a museum and monument to the Constitution," said Bill Cowen, a spokesperson for the Center. Passersby will see the Preamble of the Constitution emblazoned on the outside of the building, Cowen said.
It was May 1787 when delegates from several states came to Philadelphia for the Constitutional Convention in order to refine the Articles of Confederation. They sweated through 16 weeks of summer, culminating on Sept. 17, 1787, with the ratification of our Constitution. The first 10 amendments to the Bill of Rights were later ratified by Congress on Dec. 15, 1791.
"As the birthplace of our great nation, there is no better place than Philadelphia to house the National Constitution Center . . . designed to provide knowledge of our Constitution and how it plays a key role in our lives," said Mayor John F. Street.
A survey sponsored by the National Constitution Center revealed more teens could name the Three Stooges than could name the three branches of government. Those surveyed (71.2 percent) knew the first three letters after "http" of almost every website is www, compared to (35.5 percent) who knew the first three words of the Constitution ("We the People").

Visitors will also be able to sign as dissenters and explain why they disagree with the Constitution's principles.
Magnificent! I can hardly wait to stop by and read the idiotic screeds of the illogical and uninformed.
Considering the fact that they just sponsored Muhamed Ali appearing for Flag Day, I'd say things don't bode well for the NCC.

Who wants to bet that when the visitor walks in the front door, he will be greeted with a big sign pointing the way to a display titled "Our Living Constitution"--or something very similar.

I'm sure you caught the rouges' gallery of pseudo socialist wonks they had on hand for the grand opening, FRiend. George Stephonopolis, Richard Dryefus, the usual Philadelphian Commies, and oh, the delicious irony if Sandra Day O'Connor (Fresh off her Constitution discarding Grutter v. Bollinger decision.)
I don't have the stomach yet to see for myself, but as another poster here said, "How far do you think you have to walk before you're confronted with a display on 'The Living Constitution'?"
This institution is a disgrace.
