Iraqi Killed, Two U.S. Soldiers Wounded in Attack
Sun June 29, 2003 04:29 AM ET
Two U.S. military police soldiers were wounded in Baghdad on Sunday when an explosion targeted a U.S. convoy, the latest in a series of hit-and-run strikes on occupation forces.
Hours earlier in a separate incident Saturday night, attackers lobbed two grenades near U.S. soldiers guarding the Iraqi National Museum, the soldiers said. The Americans escaped harm but a neighboring store was damaged. There were no casualties.
"We do not know if it intended to hit our position or to hit that little store that is down there. Both grenades exploded near that store," Sgt. John Kuzar, one of the soldiers guarding the museum, told Reuters Television.
A U.S. military spokesman said the two wounded Americans from the convoy were evacuated to a military hospital. There were no details on exactly how the Iraqi civilian died.
Two military vehicles were damaged, the spokesman said.
U.S. forces have been targeted repeatedly in recent days by what senior military officials consider to be die-hard loyalists of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, whose 24-year rule was ended by the U.S.-led invasion in April.
At least 22 Americans have been killed by hostile fire since President Bush declared major combat over on May 1. Two others were found dead in unclear circumstances on Saturday.
Six British military police were killed in the south of Iraq Tuesday.
The attacks have also hit Iraqi bystanders. Friday two Iraqis were injured in a town outside Baghdad when a U.S. convoy was targeted by explosives.
A word to the Defense Department. Start emphasizing this more. When there's an incident, mention the innocent Iraqis killed, upfront.
And it's time President Bush starts issuing some statements, also, to quell some of the negativism, rumors, falling civilian morale and false info taking hold in this country.
Things are not as bad in Iraq as the press and the liberals are making it appear, but there's little to no leadership to counteract this. We need more than a couple of Republican or conservative pundits on the talking-head shows to get a positive message out on progress in Iran.

Someone should point out the fact that statistically, and American soldier is safer in Iraq than he would be in Democrat occupied Los Angeles county - even during the war, casualties were lower in Iraq than in the Peoples' Republic of California - and even in JUST LA COUNTY.
So far, we are losing about 11 Americans per month to hostile action, accidents, etc. in Iraq. That would be an annual rate of some 121. Los Angeles County is 8 times as dangerous.
It is understandable and admirable that the armed forces are primarily concerned with their own. But the US media will always report US casualties, the Iraqis need to be mentioned. Names would be helpful.
