Help appreciated, Dad has lung cancer, vanity
email from my mom

Posted on 06/26/2003 10:39:53 PM PDT by Cplusplus

The report from the doc is not good news. More tests on Tuesday. Then we will know the form of treatment for your dad. He has cancer in his lungs. He has had it for awhile and didn't know. He has been in severe pain. I hope the medication he got today will help. WE are only telling you kids now. Pray for him and all of us. David and Susan know. I just finished talking with them. I just didn't know a good time to call you. You all can call each other . David calls often. He has a special on his cell phone. I can call his number, let it ring one time and he will call us back. Love you Mom.

I haven't been registered for long on this website. I am a regular reader though. The body of the thread is an email just received from my mother(titled "bad news") and I'm hoping that someone has some advice. Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't have any advice for you, but I'll willingly pray for your dad. I can say that you shouldn't give up hope, that you should be there for your mom because she's really going to need your strength.

Whether you've posted here or not will not matter to the good people on this board. We're here for you if you need us.

LOTS of talks with the Lord. Know what you are going through, been there too many times. TAKE any help that is offered, DON'T try to be superperson. Make peace with your dad, and get him to write his memories in a notebook, any jokes, special knowledge, war stories, etc.

Prayers for your dad and your family. Talk with your dad. Write to your dad. Hug your dad. Your mother needs you, too.

As others have said, I have no advice but plenty of prayers. May God be with your Dad, your Mom, and all of your family!

I was diagnosed with lung cancer 11 years ago and told my only option was chemo therapy. I was given 1-1 1\2 years to live. I declined and turned to alternate therapy. I will share my experience if you are interested.

There are five lobes to the lungs. If the cancer is isolated in a lobe, the lobe can be removed with little loss of function. If it isn't detected in the lymph nodes, he could enjoy a complete recovery.

It's very unlikely this is the case, however. What to do depends entirely on the type of cancer and where they find it (I assume they're doing a PET scan to check for biological activity).

If it looks bad, consider a clinical trial (www.clinicaltrials.gov). Also consider going to a top facility, e.g., Sloan-Kettering, M.D. Anderson, Johns Hopkins. Best wishes and prayers to your dad and to you.

First of all, get ready to discover your true self - the self that only comes out when the chips go down. Then, be ready to put that self into action. It is bitterly hard, and dazzlingly revealing into the truest works of love.

Your Father is about to become more vulnerable, more human, more heroic than you have ever known him before... every flaw will be magnified, every virtue intensified to the point of saturation. You will also undergo the same transformation; this period of your life will be one of painful and purifying fire. What comes out the other side will be pure him, pure you. If you go together, the result will be pure gold.

I passed through the fire of cancer with my Father - I came out the other side a concentrated, stronger human being. My Father came out the other side into eternal life. It was the hardest, most life-changing event ever to happen to me, and yet it was the one that made me say out loud, "there is a God of miracles".

Do not be afraid to be there for your Father, and do not be afraid to hope that he can win this battle. Fight hard, pray harder, and believe that this is just one part of the journey. This illness may be but a bend in the road for him, or it may lead him Home; but either way, you will make it through the fire, both of you...

I just saw your post on Freerepublic. I love this site but I do not post. I have been a lurker since 911. My best friend was recently diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and I am very worried. Yes she has been a smoker for almost 40 years. She is 52 years old. My father and mother in law died of lung cancer. I know how hard it is to beat this cancer.

I was thrilled to read your post about your lung cancer survival for over 11 years.

I would greatly appreciate any tips or ideas about alternative treatments and pass them along to Nanci. She has a very strong will and is handling the treatments pretty good so far. She is currently taking chemo and radiation. She was given about one year with treatment.

Please tell me about your experience. Thank you.

Susan

Thanks so much for your replies, I knew I came to the right place. My mind is swimming right now. My dad is my hero and I am most appreciative of all of your replies. Thank you so much. It's nice to know there are people out there who are as faithful as you are my friends. Prayers are most appreciated.

I lost my dad to it in April of 2001. My heart goes out to you and your family.

In retrospect, the most lasting gifts my father left to me came during this time. There was a courage we all found in our family, one that God gives us all in times of tremendous struggle and loss.

I sincerely hope that your father will survive this battle. Mine didn't, but I do know a young man who has beaten cancer three different times and is a picture of health. May you be strong and at peace throughout the coming days.

My prayers go out to you. I lost my father last Sept. to lung cancer. He was told he had 6 months to live 5 years ago. He went through the radiation, chemo treatments, partial lung removal, experimental drugs, you name it he tried it. What got him was his zest for life, he did all the things he wanted and enjoyed every minute of it. The Dr's told my mother that was part of what keep him alive.
When Hospice finally was called in they were wonderful people, not just for Dad but for the whole family.

I wish you and your Dad the best of luck and may your Dad enjoy the time he has left as much as mine did
