The comic strip "Garfield" turns 25 today, still enormously popular and at the same time a throwback.

Other than some changes in the characters' appearance, the strip has stayed the same since its debut in 1978.

But the rest of the comics landscape has changed drastically. What were once the "funnies" are now often outspoken and controversial.

Just in case any of you missed the thread about a new cartoon strip a few months ago, this is the up-and-coming strip for us on the right.

It's not yet up to the standards of Mallrd but there are moments of definite brilliance.

My wife hates Garfield but loves "Get Fuzzy," about another single guy with an obnoxious cat and dog. I don't like Garfield either, but I have often pointed out that Garfield's owner at least eats meat and dates a girl now and then. I have to wonder about the other guy.

Boondocks and Mallard Filmore preach to their own choirs.
Doonesbury as morphed into the Maureen Dowd of comics.

Garfield still can make everybody laugh.

Boondocks and Mallard Filmore preach to their own choirs.

The main difference being that Mallard Filmore is done by a sane person. Boondocks seems to be done by one of those paranoid socialist losers over at DU.com.

Mallard Filmore is a ham handed embarrassment.

I hope Garfield goes another 25! He's the only thing worth opening the funny pages for, other than reading the teen angst of "Luanne."

I adore Garfield. I even named my cat Nermal (the world's cutest kitten), but he actually has more of a Garfield disposition. I can totally relate to his appreciation of a simple, albeit lazy, life.

Happy Birthday, Garfield!

Hobbes is more my idea of a cartoon cat, though.

Actually, several. Of course, like Dilbert's dates, they were typically disastrous, but at least we knew he liked girls!

And if I remember, Garfield's vet was quite hot, but I don't think John was ever able to talk her into going out.
