US told Japan that NKorea has several nuclear warheads: report

US authorities have unofficially told their Japanese counterparts that North Korea already possesses several small nuclear warheads for ballistic missiles, a news report said.

It is the first confirmation that Pyongyang has nuclear missiles that can immediately strike Japan, the Sankei Shimbun said, citing sources related to Japan and the United States.

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other US officials have publicly confirmed that North Korea was developing nuclear weapons.

Until now, however, they have not been clear about what stage of development North Korea was at, the Sankei said.

Washington has told Tokyo that the number of nuclear warheads that North Korea has is "not just one or two," the Sankei said.

It was not clear how the United States obtained the information, nor whether those weapons were developed or purchased by North Korea, the Sankei said.

Washington disclosed the information to Tokyo around March, the Sankei said.

N Korea (and Washington) may want everyone to think they have nukes, but I seriously doubt it. If they got 'em then let 'em prove it.

Let's pray this isn't true. If it is, let's pray they're never used.

This is a very serious threat, because the President of N. Korea is just crazy enough to prove it. The real question is whether they will launch it against Japan, S. Korea or the US or all three, counting on us caring more for the N. Korean people than he does.

If we had missile defense, which we would if it weren't for the Democrats, then we could tell CHINA, that if anything comes out of N. Korea to anywhere, we will be launching nukes against China.

What if they do. What in hell do you think you will accomplish by a random nuke? Anywhere.

I'd rather they didn't do that...

Nuclear blackmail is a very dangerous game to play, and is not the purpose of missle defense.

Like heck it isn't. That is exactly the purpose of missile defense: to defend ourselves from the likes of Kim Jung Il. And if you think China didn't have a hand in arming N. Korea, I have bridges to sell to you.
The point is exactly so that we can deal with such nations from a position of strength, not vulnerability.
