HILLARY'S CAPTIVE READERS - (Shrillery's Strongarm Sales Tactics)
The American Prowler ^ | June 19, 2003 | The prowler

Now that Sen. Hillary Clinton's book has topped out at the 600,000 sales range, Clinton and her supporters seem to have found a way to keep the book sales coming. Clinton's Senate staff and schedulers have made it clear to her Democratic Senate colleagues and groups interested in having her appear at fundraisers that she will only attend if copies of her books are either purchased in bulk for free distribution at the event or her books are made available for purchase while she is in attendance.

"They told me Mrs. Clinton will be more than happy to sign all the books and that she would spend plenty of time with those people who bought them," says a publicity director for a Washington-based nonprofit who inquired about a possible appearance by Clinton early next fall. "It wasn't like they were telling me we had to have the books, but the underlying message seemed to be, if we want a commitment, a promise of the book sales would help us get her."

Further confirmation of Clinton's people seeking a quid pro quo would be her planned appearances at fundraisers for Barbara Boxer, Patty Murray, and Blanche Lincoln, all up for re-election in 2004. All three will be selling copies of Clinton's book and she will be appearing at all three events with the express purpose of signing them.

Also, the Democratic National Committee is negotiating not with the publisher Simon and Schuster, but with several local Washington, D.C. bookstores for purchases of Clinton's book which would possibly be used as premiums for donors. "We haven't worked it out yet, but we think by going through the bookstores the sales would be reflected not as bulk and would insure Senator Clinton would have a long stay at the top of the bestseller lists," says a DNC staffer.

It's expected that Clinton will emerge in the top slot of the New York Times latest bestseller lists. And Democrats have made keeping her on top a priority throughout the summer.

Why am I not surprised by this?

Story is halfway down the linked page.

According to whom? Simon & Shyster?

I believe the Prowler is giving her too much credit. I'd love to see actual sales figures to verify the 600,000 sold figure.

The possibilities are endless: union mass buys, black church mass buys, teacher union mass buys, gay/lesbian mass buys, Democrat candidate mass buys, political activist group mass buys - she could probably strongarm sales of this book right up into the 2008 election simply by requiring mass buys for her appearance/endorsement/support. And all legitimate - they would do the buying just for the pleasure of her smile at their events.

Isn't this what Jim Whatshisname, Democrat House member from Texas, did? He wrote a book, and then pushed it off on unions and other Democrat interest groups as a means of fund-raising, as I recall.

More Dem dollars for Hill's book = fewer Dem dollars for other campaigns. The new giant sucking sound.

Not surprising. Rats cooking the books, as per usual. Hope Rush et. al gets this out. Also, I must commend the DNC mole as well as AP's sources. Otherwise, this stuff will never see the light of day...

I had to laugh last night, watching the Late Show w/Letterman. He mentioned this book, then solicited the audience by way of applause as to how many people had read the Shrew's book.

There was dead silence.

Then Dave and everybody broke out laughing, and Dave went on to say, "Well, you wouldn't know it from this audience, but this book's a best seller."

The DNC really should offer a better quality product to act as an incentive to donate. Might I suggest Charmin?

I don't trust any of the figures either. All we hear is that it takes weeks to get an accurate count, and I believe Rush said his experience with his last book lends him to believe it's true. Still, I find it odd that it would take so long to get a fairly accurate count of units sold. The larger chains must certainly have elborate point-of-sale systems that can report by SKU number, and in this era of large ERP back office computing systems one would think they could establish retail sales levels daily, but what do I know.

Whatever the numbers are, this tactic is SO Hillary it's nauseating. Come to think of it, anything to do with Hillary is nauseating.

I'm surprised some state AG's office hasn't gotten the bright idea to file some sort of consumer oriented suit against purported bestseller list purveyors and publishers who use this info. We're going after Martha Stewart for fraud.

That must have been beautiful television. Sorry I missed it. Dave's never better than when he's skewering deluded self-important fools.

Ah, but it might not be about units sold. I kid you not. Depending on the list, the people compiling the info might be asking retailers (who may or may not have a reason to skew the answer) about something as squishy as sales rankings, and then only retailers in big cities. This whole mess needs to be investigated. These stupid lists are marketing tools now as much as anything else. Consumers are getting duped.

Honestly, I think Dave was completely surprised by the dead silence. He's not often caught off guard, but I got that impression. Though admittedly I was only paying partial attention, until the awkward silence part anyways.

I'm just patiently waiting for the day when some Dem who is new to national office (read - Hillary doesn't have any FBI files on them) realizes that those two are completely prepared to decimate the party for their own ends and has the guts to point that fact out to the rest of the party. I simply can't believe that the Dems are totally blind to a man regarding the rot the Klinton's are infecting the party with. Not that I want to see a Dem recovery, you understand, I just want to see the end of Bill and Shrillery.

God's own truth.
But, the only: "giant sucking sound" that I remember was Monica.

Was it Jim Wright who pulled this off a couple of decades ago? This will get out, and will be embarrassing.
