US troops fire on Iraqi protest

American troops have opened fire on a demonstration in Baghdad. There are reports of several casualties, with the AFP news agency saying that one man was shot dead.

The demonstration - by sacked members of the Iraqi army - was taking place outside the main entrance to the former presidential compound which now houses the US-led military coalition running Iraq.

Demonstrators started throwing stones at the US guards who responded with gunfire.

The crowd also set upon a television crews and beat passing United Nations and television vehicles with their shoes, witnesses said.

"Demonstrators began to scatter when the gunfire sounded," said AP photographer Victor Caivano.

"Newsmen also retreated under a hail of stones."

Mr Caivano said demonstrators told him that two or three people had been killed.

But he said that could not be immediately confirmed and he did not see any casualties being taken away.

The demonstration took place as US troops intensified their searches in the capital for illegal weapons and supporters of Saddam Hussein's regime.

Cause for worry.

AFP via BBC. I am more likely to look for a retraction than to worry.

And there is no reason to excerpt from sources that are not owned by the Washington Post or LA Times.

They can blame Saddam. He was a bad boss, he lost the war and got them humiliated. They lost and now they must be administered. They have no rights because they lost.

FWIW the - not very reliable - Metro News Source reports 2 Iraqis have been shot and killed. SO far no reports of US injuries.

Not really. These people turned their backs on Saddam and that's why the first phase of the war ended so quickly. The US should use them to build a security force so that this phase will be over soon too.

Forget about democracy. Just get out the checkbook and put everybody in Iraq on the payroll. That's all they want. Pay them first, democracy (or some b.s. Islamic version of it) will follow.

Rule No. 1: Don't throw rocks at people with guns.
The Pali's still don't undersatnd that, and they continue to die, just like the Iraq's will.
Wonder why they're stuck in the 9th Century? - Because they're idiots.

Stones can kill.

"Stoned to death" doesn't involve a bong...

I'm guessing these particular rioters won't be back. :)

When the wussy leftists complain, know that if this happened in Syria, the Syrian government would have made sure to shoot everyone. Funny, you don't see foaming RDDB's protesting about that - and it's in the news all the time.

I've been a Republican since 1988-don't question my beliefs because you don't like the way I post.

Don't not question my intellegence- my IQ is 138.

You shouldn't be accusing people without facts. I work for a living and didn't know what publications have threatened legal action against Jim. I thought it better to be safe than sorry.

Oh, this. This has been going on for about two weeks. These are former members of Saddam's army. They demand the US PAY them or they will stage attacks on our troops.

IMO, the more dead extortionists the better. The conquering army does NOT pay the vanquished army protection money. Protection money is what they are demanding.

Oh...and welcome to FR. You don't need to exerpt everything. There's a list around here somewhere of the publications which have to be excerpted.

As for this story, the info is good....I haven't been posting here as much as I used to, but I AM surprised the news wasn't out on FR a while ago.

They've used this technique before. They will stage a protest or riot to get close to a US position then they'll attack that position with gunfire. They've been experimenting over the past few days concerning what types of 'spontaneous expressions of rage' the US will tolerate.

It's also a technique readily available from the film "Rules of Engagement." There the Yemenis(btw, I remember a critic in the school paper whining "why Yemenis?"...what an idiot) staged a protest but then nearly all of them began pulling out automatic weapons and firing on the embassy. Snipers on roofs also fired on the Marines.

Marines were dying and of course Sam L. Jackson's character orders his men to open fire, killing dozens of "protestors." Of course, this is the entire purpose of these events. These are NOT Western-style demonstrations.
