Comisky Park Attacker Hired As Part of Staff At U.S. Open

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- The last time he was yards away from a playing field, William Ligue Jr. ran onto it, approached the first-base coach of the Kansas City Royals from behind and attacked him.

On Sunday, Ligue was spotted working at the U.S. Open outside Chicago as part of a cleaning staff, wearing a credential that gave him access to many of the courtesy tents surrounding the players' clubhouse and put him a few dozen yards away from the first tee.

No one, he insisted, was in harm's way.

"I'm no security risk, I'm no threat to society," Ligue said Sunday.

Ligue, 35, told a reporter he is a changed man since the night of Sept. 19, 2002, when he and his teenage son gained national notoriety after running onto the field at Comiskey Park and attacking Tom Gamboa during the White Sox-Royals game.

Ligue, who last month changed his plea to guilty on two counts of aggravated battery, will be sentenced Wednesday. His punishment could range from probation to up to five years in prison.

Ligue was one of the thousands of workers employed by vendors for the U.S. Open, but one official said Sunday that she was unaware of his role in the Comiskey attack.

"I did not know that and it does concern me a little," Nancy Bennett, the manager of U.S. Open admissions, said.

Ligue's son, released to his mother's custody, has been sentenced to five years' probation and 30 hours of community service. Before his sentencing, Gamboa advocated probation rather than prison for the youth.

Ligue's change of plea was unexpected and not part of a plea agreement, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney's office said last month.

I'm not sure how many of you remember, but that's not exactly the type of person I'd like to see on the event staff at the U.S. Open, within easy reach of many of the players.

Sounds like something Bill Clinton would say.

I hope he gets the latter.

Yeah, I remember this freak all too well. He looks like a crack addict, and could've easily put that KC coach into a coma will all those kicks to the head.

I've never seen an accounting of WHY. Why did Ligue and his son do it? Drugs? Bad Karma? Satan told him? Why?

I worked a PGA tournament for a couple of years and Leslie Nielson played in the pro-am right after Airplane came out. One of our guys had a Fart Box (makes a sound) and Leslie fell in love with it. He stole it before the day was over. The next time I saw him was on the Tonight Show and guess what he had with him.

Somebody has a head screwed on backwards. Ligue attacks someone then gets a general pass to have open season on anyone as a reward. Whoa!

I heard on the radio this morning that some extremely buxom babe took her shirt off behind one of the golfers at the 11th hole. She had an "ad" for the Golden Palace painted on her back. Anyone else hear about that?

No reason why it could not have been "d" all of the above.

He gave some cock-and-bull story about how Gamboa had "flipped the bird" at his son and that Gamboa "had it coming."

From The Smoking Gun:

Meet William Ligue, Jr. He's the 34-year-old numbskull who--along with his 14-year-old son--was arrested last night (9/19) for attacking Kansas City Royals coach Tom Gamboa at Chicago's Comiskey Park. With one out in the top of the ninth, the Ligues emerged from the stands behind first base, knocked Gamboa to the ground, and started battering the 54-year-old coach. The elder Ligue, who posed earlier today for this Chicago Police Department mug shot, was hit with an aggravated battery charge, while his progeny Michael faces a juvenile battery charge. Ligue, who claimed that Gamboa flipped his son the bird, has a variety of previous arrests, including 2000 and 2001 busts for domestic abuse--though both cases were later dropped. According to the following Cook County Circuit Court misdemeanor complaints, Ligue was charged last May with striking his girlfriend "in the face, head, neck, back, nose with his fist" and with tossing a brick through the window of his squeeze's crib.

To get back on subject, take a look at this. This is from the Chicago Tribune the day after the attack. Not sure if this is the father or the son...they both look pretty much alike!

Looks like a freakin' animal to me...you're right about the crack addict thing. I had heard of this incident right after it happened, but not seen a photo.
