Lead poisoning killing California condors

Sacramento, California - Two new studies say lead poisoning is killing California's condors, apparently thanks to wildlife killed by hunters and eaten by the giant birds.

The problem is endangering efforts to rescue Condors from near extinction.

The studies are prompting new voluntary guidelines for hunters. They should remove or bury carcasses; or remove bullets and surrounding impacted areas; or use lead-free ammunition.

The wild population dropped to just 15 before a captive-breeding program brought it back to 221.

Eighty-two condors now inhabit the California mountains bordering the San Joaquin Valley, northern Arizona and southern Utah and northern Baja California.

use lead-free ammunition

Ok, we'll use depleted uranium ammunition then.

Some of the local pilots here joke about hitting condors with their planes; If it happens, they joke, you might as well keep flying and ditch in the ocean. Killing a condor, even by accident brings consequences worse than child molestation convictions.

One guess as to the political proclivities of those who wrote the studies -- oh, and did they collaborate?

I hope they've subtracted for the effect of lead their visiting helicopters add to the condor environment. Aviation gas for piston-engined aircraft still contains lead to boost the octane. If given the choice of a helicopter verses hiking in, a government shovel stander will always choose the helicopter.

Normally, when hunters shoot game THEY eat it. And, if hunters DON't eat it, they have it mounted. This doesn't pass the smell test.

We mount it AND eat it. Or at least it sits in our freezer for a couple years and then is disposed of in a sanitary manner far from any Condors.

This article is pure Barbara Striesand. An absolute fabrication.

The Condor is extinct (or should be) because it is a poorly designed bird. It's a holdover from the iceage when mega-herbavours ranged the continent in the tens of millions. It's a stupid bird incapable of adaptation unlike several other viable and succesful scavangers still in plentiful supply.

Wasting millions keeping it from extinctinon is typical of extremist environmentalism. This bird should be their emblem and their sign. Stupidity rules.

Or fly on to Texas and call a taxidermist.

We had to give up lead shot for migratory bird hunting years ago.

Barnes has been making premium all bronze expanding hunting bullets for over a decade and others are following suit.

We don't need lead and it just brings gun owners an unnecessary set of enemies. We could always use silver. At todays prices, it's not unreasonable.

California condors have been trying to go extinct for a long time, and eventually they will find a way.

How many are killed by the Enviral Whacko Wind Generators?

The birds that get whacked by these Enviral Wind Generators each day is very high. Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles and other birds are whacked everyday.

Finally let these stupid damn birds die off. Millions of $'s have spent directly and the indirect cost of protecting would probably pay for a good part of our Iraqi war effort.

Naah, Rachel Carson got rid of the DDTs.

Probably the Old Growth Forests got 'em. Maybe we need to get rid of the Old Growth Forests.

A condor is a vulture. What has made them so special, outside the fact that the Germans named a pre-World War II plane after them?

100% correct- this is manufactured "science" for furthering an agenda. Gun owner as boogeyman.

OTOH, maybe there really are millions of myopic - and not very hungry - hunters in Kali.
