Why anyone would use AOL is beyond me. I never figured out what purpose it serves except to get in the way of internet service.

I got AOL in 1997 since most countries had access to it without needing to call back to the US. There was a surcharge but cheaper than calling back to the US. I needed that portability. Now my email is so entrench with so many I hate to change it. I will just as soon as broadband rates come down one more time.

I agree, I found AOL to be more of hinderance to internet access than the lower cost ISPs that do nothing more than provide a gateway. But there is one thing AOL has and that is free dial up numbers is many, many areas. I like to be able to get online when I travel but can't with my little local ISP. Anyone know of an ISP with lots of access throughout the US?? Other than AOL? Thanks in advance.

Well, i'll tell ya.....I'd LOVE to get away from AOL,but unfortunately any other ISP i've inquired about doesn't offer a local dial-up number where i'm at.The only exception is nraonline.com,which I tried at one time, but the email service is a joke, and dial-up as well as number of pop-up ads is poor as well.If anyone out there knows of any ISP that offers local numbers in south eastern VA (Northern Neck area)I'd sure like to know...and i'd switch in a nanosecond!!!!!
