SARS on the wane, but stigma lingers, officials say

TORONTO (AFP) - A second SARS (news - web sites) outbreak here is tailing off, but the fallout from Toronto's severe acute respiratory syndrome is still felt at hospitals, businesses and in the rest of Canada.

Canada is the only country outside Asia to report any SARS-related deaths since it arrived in March. All 32 Canadian deaths occurred in the Toronto area. Seven of these are linked to the most recent outbreak, first reported on May 22.

Ontario's commissioner of public security, James Young, said that health officials saw a peak in new SARS cases over the weekend. However, they were not "seeing surprises" so far.

"We expect that we will see some more cases in the next few days," as the outbreak continues on a downward slope, he told reporters Tuesday.

Ontario, whose capital is Toronto, reported 64 probable SARS cases Tuesday, up two from Monday.

A peak in cases over the weekend, but "no surprises."

How does he know it's the peak?

They have to be calculating a future wave due to the highschool/daycare exposure and the kids breaking quarantine...there will be more cases shortly.

"...221 other persons under investigation (as a precautionary measure, these persons receive the same treatment as probable and suspect cases)"

So they have 221 cases they have conveniently left out of their official case totals. These obviously should be in the suspect column.

Thanks, Ari... only one county away from me! I am in Chautauqua County... just south of Niagara County. I expect it to be here soon. Just too many Torontonians down here for it not to be, but, I am not gonna panic.

I feel so bad for Canada. I know they messed up, but I know we here on this side of the border wouldn't have done any better if we had been the unlucky ones to get an early "super-spreader" case showing up in one of our emergency rooms.

None of our health care workers would have been any quicker to put on the proper garb than the Toronto health care workers were. I mean, "like, who knew"???
