The electronics industry is paying more attention to the environmental friendliness of its products. But environmentalists worry that the concern is just ``green washing,'' or lip service with minimal environmental benefits, meant to spur sales to green-conscious consumers.

In the past decade, companies have made products that cause less environmental harm or use less energy. But the environmentalists want them to look beyond profit motives when it comes to deciding whether to implement environmentally friendly changes to their product lines.

Greens: "High Tech must do a better job about old and discarded equipment!"

High Tech: "You're right. We agree with you."

Greens: (gasp) "No Fair!!"

But HP researchers believe there's value in creating a printer with a case that degrades in landfill conditions within three months. A biodegradable product would at least eliminate the need to incinerate plastics that aren't recyclable.

A printer that will self-destruct. Good marketing ploy, you can sell a ton of printers that way. Why are the greens interested in hi-tech? Isn't that a sacrilege in their earth worshiping socialist cult?

Who throws their printer away?(From the owner of an still running LaserJet 4L) The problem is the cartridges that you can't refill because they are now one use only!
