CHICAGO - (KRT) - Forged documents that the United States used to build its case against Iraq were likely written by someone in Niger's embassy in Rome who hoped to make quick money, a source close to the United Nations investigation said.

The documents, about a dozen letters on Niger's governmental letterhead, suggested that the African nation had agreed to supply Iraq with uranium, used in nuclear weapons production, the source said. Some of the letters were addressed to an Iraqi official.

"We believe it was given to us in good faith," the spokeswoman said. "It doesn't seem that it was fabricated by British or American intelligence agencies in order to make a case" for war. "

---

To the great chagrin of the anti-Bush crowd, who hoped they could blame the US for it.

But negligence vs. deliberate forgery in the intel services are two very different things. Considering the vast amount of data they are getting things slip through. That is not major news.

If the intel services forged the documents deliberately to justify the war, that would be news and a major problem.
But the investigation showed this was not the case.

Oh come on... it was offered in good faith...

It was a mistake... but to blame Bush and Blair is just ridiculous...

If we investigated every lead given to us in relation to foreign homeland security issues there wouldn't be enough staff to do it...

Leaks during the G-8 "weak" will dominate the news this entire "week" as the European Trade Cartel tries to embrass President Bush. I only wonder what is happening behind the scenes to temper the French. Bush is not one to publically decry anything, bur rather works quietly (a contrast to the old administration) doing the work of the American People.

Yeah..such as what intelligence agency took them at face value and passed them to the UK and the USA. Which country has a monopoly on uranium production in Niger and which country had the most to gain by these reports being proven false. Also it is interesting that this fraud was discovered so fast once the UK and USA had swallowed the bait. Boy, oh boy, the UN is good at detecting misinformation, isn't it?

You mean that we should let this too pass? My statement at #5 said that this merits investigation to uncover who passed this document on as fact.

It is about time for accountability--do you know how many people lost their jobs as punishment for security lapses after 9/11?? ZERO! No one has ever been disciplined for the failures. The closest we came was when the head of the Boston Port Authority resigned over airport security failuers a few days after.

I want to see feet held to the fire.

Consider yourself enlightened.
