A married vicar who fathered the illegitimate child of his church organist has claimed he was duped into having sex. The Rev Philip Gray faced his congregation yesterday at St Mary the Virgin church in Mendlesham near Stowmarket, Suffolk, for the first time since the revelation that he had fathered a son with Belinda Denton-Cardew five years ago.

Details of the son emerged when Mrs Denton-Cardew, a divorcee, won child support payments after DNA evidence indicated that the vicar had almost certainly fathered her son, Benjamin.

Mr Gray, 61, who has five other children with his wife, Anne, had complained to police that he must have been duped into having sex with Ms Denton-Cardew, a primary schoolteacher. Officers investigated his claim that he had been drugged and had sex without knowing it. A file was passed to the crime prosecution service, which last week decided not to take any action.

Mrs Denton-Cardew, 48, spoke out after Mr Gray criticised the reality television show Surprise Weddings, saying "marriage is one of the sacraments of the church".

She has claimed that she became pregnant during a "loving relationship" that lasted for several years.

Mr Gray, 61, yesterday tried to explain the situation to his congregation where he has served for almost 30 years.

"I am the victim and not the perpetrator of a sinister scheme," he said. "I have a clear conscience and the backing of the diocesan and provincial bishops. After consultation with them I have their assurance my priesthood is not in jeopardy."
