The Star Tribune would drop its 9-year-old ban on American Indian nicknames in sports pages under a tentative policy being circulated among staff and American Indian groups for comment.
In a memo to staff on Friday, Editor Anders Gyllenhaal characterized the planned shift as a matter of accuracy in reporting.

``This isn't nearly as much about Indian names as it is about the paper's responsibility toward accuracy and realism,'' Gyllenhaal wrote. "...a practice we will continue to ignore in both our news and political reporting."

The only safe thing to do is ban all names based on nouns. That'll solve it. And no pesky adjectives as a cheap way to get at the nouns either.

"Gyllenhaal", isn't that Welch? I always wondered what happened to Jefferson's Welch Indians. Now we know.

``This isn't nearly as much about Indian names as it is about the paper's responsibility toward accuracy and realism,'' Gyllenhaal wrote. It's about 100% total Political Correctness. Another case of a newspaper making up its own news instead just reporting what happens.

Is the goal to completely remove any reference to the American Indian culture? Is this a way the left is using to sweep guilt of past bad deeds under the rug? It's very interesting that instead of celibrating our aboriginal culture we are silencing every reference to it.

I have always thought the Washington "Redskins" should change their name. It has always grated on my nerves.
A great new name, D.C. "Redskins"

That's not what the author is talking about. This is about accuracy and precision in reporting facts. They should be the "Maryland Redskins". Every year I follow the heated rivalries between the Maryland Redskins, the Irving Cowboys and the New Jersey Giants. That's what the NFL is all about.
