Feminism is AIDS bill's message to African men

WASHINGTON — The Senate, which promotes sexual abstinence as a way of stemming the spread of AIDS in Africa, has another message for the continent's males.

The Senate early yesterday passed a $15 billion bill to help in the fight against the disease. While much debate centered on sexual abstinence, to which one-third of prevention funding would be devoted, senators without dissent passed a novel provision to teach feminism to African men.

"Much of the transmission of the HIV virus is facilitated by culture, and issues surrounding injustice against women should be addressed," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said this week. He said he favored "changing male behavior."

The feminist-oriented measure, written by Rep. Joseph Crowley, D-N.Y., and included in the House bill, would mark the first time the United States has funded projects aimed at changing men's attitudes toward women.

Crowley's amendment would provide financial assistance "for the purpose of encouraging men to be responsible in their sexual behavior, child rearing and to respect women." It calls for programs "reducing sexual violence and coercion, including child marriage, widow inheritance and polygamy."

Love the title. This is not feminism but the exact opposite, since feminism in the US has little to do with that but more to do with empowering women's sexual freedom ( promiscuity and the delight of every hormone crazed teen male). This is actually the code of the true male gentleman, not feminism.

If you changed the feminism to Christian then what is happening makes sense. We are bringing Christian values to pagan and Muslim dominated societies.

I'm sure the liberals will stop protesting that all male golf course long enough to declare that to insist that women in Africa be treated with equality is an affront to traditional values there.

This idiot is a so-called conservative? He puts his foot in his mouth at least as much as Lott.

This aid like all foreign aid will only goe into the pockets of those in charge and their corrupt leadership.
It is a known fact less than %10 of any foreign aid gets to where it is supposed to go.
The same statement applies to the many programs here in America also.I saw one of the Representaives on the news arguing about the budget cutting back on monies for the Childrens Defense Fund. They put the word child in there to get the money and attention and around 1% of the money is actually spent on children with the rest going to lawyers and Administration. I read this in an article sometime back.
Also just look at the aid that is funneled back into political organizations. Foreign countries are now buying the vote of our elected officials with our own money, how ironic.

Interesting the Senate wants to export the idea of abstinence as a way to control AIDS but in the US, AIDS has political clout.. Gee a direct correlation between sex and AIDS.. wow.. will wonders never cease.

Yeah. The virus is cultured in someone's semen and then passed on during sexual contact.
