VICTORIA, Texas, May 14 — Sheriff’s deputies responding to reports of a disturbance at a truck stop in south Texas early Wednesday found 17 people dead in and around an abandoned trailer. Radio reports said the victims appeared to be illegal immigrants being smuggled from Mexico.

Wow, that's my hometown... parents and sister still there. 77 is the main drag up from Mexico, goes right thru Victoria. I've seen many strange things along that stretch of road...

Temp down there is most likely already pushing the 90+ degree mark, and that is only about 20 or so miles from the Gulf. Lots of humidity. Not good to be locked in the back of a semi in those conditions.

But that is mostly just a guess. Without examining them, that's all I can offer by way of hypothesis...

So, why were they dead?

I suspect the smuggler abandoned them for some reason and left them to rot in the heat.

I also wonder how much there was in that trailer for them. I vaguely remember a similar story in Hungary where scores of Chinamen were found crammed into a tiny microbus. I don't remember if any of them actually died, but they sure weren't in a good shape when they were found.

These smugglers are in deep trouble. They are supposed to notify Presidente Fox, personnally, when an illegal alien is in desperate need of what and may die. Fox, of course, gets a cut of each fee the coyote collects.

Let's do the math. There were 50 illegal aliens trying to sneak into our country without permission. 13 have died, 12 have been hospilatized (bets on whether the US taxpayer or their healthcare insurance carrier or the Mexican government will pick up the tab?) and that leaves 25 whose whereabouts are unknown. I am hoping that not more than 5 of the missing illegals are actually Al Qaeda terrorists, shipped over from Cuba for insertion into the US via Mexico.
