May 11, 2003 -- As SARS fears spiral out of control, hundreds of cats and dogs in China have met gruesome deaths at the hands of angry mobs who suspect pets could spread the virus - which has killed eight more people, government officials reported.

AIDS Link Seen Helpful in Fight Against SARS:
Hong Kong scientists have found that protein fragments used to fight the HIV virus may help combat Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. And Taipei will make commuters wear face masks in hope of curtailing the spread of SARS.
Researchers at Hong Kong University on Sunday said that protein fragments known as peptides used to protect cells from the HIV virus have proven similarly useful against SARS.
They say experiments on tissue samples also show the virus that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome attacks cells in a way that is similar to HIV.

While the number of Chinese fatalities rose to 235, pets have been strung up, buried alive, poisoned and tossed from high-rise windows by vigilantes and police throughout Beijing and southern China. People are going nuts.

I'm haunted by the nursing assistants who lost their jobs when they became sick, after taking care of SARS patients. They couldn't afford medical care...now where are they, who are they infecting...how many of them, working for the pennies they could earn and with no protection, are among the uncounted, unacknowledged SARS victims dying, perhaps, in a hovel or on the street....
