Click some of the links on this page to see some examples of where your taxpayer dollars are going. $40K for art representing the Colorado River? Sounds a bit ridiculous to me...
You can visit the Endowment's website at www.nea.gov and click around to see additional examples of this...

Actually I think lots of people haven't had nearly the exposure to the arts as would be ideal. An appreciation for the arts, including music, dance, etc, as well as the visual arts such as painting, is an important part of understanding and contributing to our collective culture. I also believe it's important to foster this beginning when kids are young, as it helps "round out" one's education.
Yes there are some abuses and frivilous spending. But, a few bad apples should not spoil the whole bunch.
(I can't find the specific item you mentioned regarding the Colorado River.)

Dave Barry's book "Below the Belt Way" has a lot of info (luckily in the form of humor or reading it might cause severe depression) on some of the crap the gov't spends our money on. So much of OUR money goes to "programs" that are stupid at best, unconstitutional all the time, and evil at worst. Until and unless the gov't stops wasting our money and doing harm with it at the same time, nothing will change for the better. I almost always vote straight Republic but I get really sick of politicians whose main foucs in life is maintaining the status quo, not rocking the boat, etc. They make me want to puke. I wish more Freepers would run for office.

"A government supported artist is an incompetent whore." -- Robert Heinlein.
Government has no business funding art.

Actually I think lots of people haven't had nearly the exposure to the arts as would be ideal. You might think so. That doesn't mean it should be done by the government or paid for by the taxpayers.
Please go back and read your statement. Hear the elitism. With respect, it could be Hillary speaking. "The little people don't have enough culture. It Takes a Village to Raise the Trailer Trash out of their Cultural Deprivation."

Yes, but how much of the money spent by the NEA et al. goes to anything other than mindless primitivism?

What about art of a national/historical importance? Isn't the statue of liberty considered "art"?

Hear the elitism
It's a shame that's all you hear. Rather elite and narrow-minded of yourself actually.
It would be great if lots of folks participated in supporting the arts. But the fact is unfortunately many people are indoctrinated with the belief that the arts are fancy-shmancy and snobby etc etc, which isn't true. The arts include anything from a bluegrass festival to the opera, from watercolors to clay, from jazz to ballet.
I would like to see the arts supported on the local level, which I feel is more appropriate than the government trying to decide what's "worthwhile". That all too often ends up being some individual's idea of 'diverse' or 'ground-breaking'.
The person that started this thread made a snide remark about something, and I was responding to that.
There was a time when "broadening one's horizons" was considered a good thing, from seeing the sights to anything else that stimulated the mind and imagination. Your comments about Hillary and trailer trash were way off base.
To: supercat
Without even researching I'd bet much more goes to anything else other than primitivism.
As an example, in the list the poster linked to, there's a grant to Greenville County School District (where I live), that's going to fund kids getting to go hear the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.
Money well spent IMHO.
To: visualops
I also believe it's important to foster this beginning when kids are young, as it helps "round out" one's education. The US government has no right to give taxpayer money to ANY of this crap. Maybe if the tax forms contained a box to check-off, much like contributions, but absolutely no way should a single nickle be given to this stuff. Its largess at its finest.
