(Arizona) Senate OKs bill requiring ID at polling booth to vote

PHOENIX — The Senate on Tuesday approved a Republican bill to require voters to present identification to vote at polling places and to sign petitions to nominate candidates or put proposed laws on the ballot.

The bill (HB2345) now returns to the House for consideration of changes made by the Senate, but Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano earlier signaled a likely veto if the bill reaches her desk.

The Senate’s 16-14 vote — with all but one Republican voting for it and all Democrats and one Republican voting against it — was a reversal of a 16-13 vote against the bill on May 1.

As approved 39-20 by the House in February, the bill would have required that a voter present an election official with photo identification or two pieces of identification with the voter’s name and address to cast a regular ballot. Those without identification would be allowed to cast a special ballot subject to later examination.

During debate, supporters said the new requirement would help prevent voter fraud.

Opponents have said it would create a hurdle that would fall predominantly on minorities. Napolitano voiced similar sentiments on Tuesday during a news briefing.

“I think it’s designed to deter people from going to the polls, and I think we should encourage people to go to the polls. I’m not in favor of that bill.”

“We’ll see how it comes out,” she said when asked directly whether she would veto the bill.

The requirement to show identification whenever voting at polling places would go beyond one imposed by a new federal election law. That law requires voters to show identification when they register for the first time.

The Senate amended the House-passed bill to also add an identification requirement for voters who sign petitions to put candidates or proposed referendums and initiatives on the ballot.

"Opponents have said it would create a hurdle that would fall predominantly on minorities."

The only real minority group in the State of Arizona lacking ID happens to be illegal aliens. I guess the Empress Napoleonitano wants them to be able to vote themselves more goodies from the real tax-paying citizens.

Not enough votes for a veto override. It will never happen.

It would be great if it did.

This is an important thing to do in order to prevent voter fraud here in Arizona. Most people think it's merely commonsense. I don't want my vote diluted by people who have no stake in the state other then sucking out the tax dollars.

Napolitano is turning out to be a real nightmare.

How can you blame Butch? "She" is looking forward to "her" re-election. Illegals voting virtually assures "her" of that.

I have always been required to show valid ID to vote since day 1, D.L./Voter card and have been refused the chance to do so even if My I.D. did not match the "list"

As it should be, in every state.

Guess, the illegals voted this IDIOT napolitano in as gov.
of AZ, & she wants to make sure she's re-elected.

Last week, "the IDIOT" announced she would NEVER close the
AZ/Mex. border, even if the USA suffered another terrorist
attack.

In further news, Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano promises to ban identification requirements at ATMs and gas station pumps.

"I think ATM cards and gasoline charge cards are designed to deter people from withdrawing money from the bank and getting gasoline, and I think we should encourage people to go to the bank and gasoline stations. I’m not in favor of that bill."

It's a useless bill.

Since every city and agency in this stupid State excepts the Matricular Consular ID card, illegal aliens will still be voting by the millions.

There are days when I really think I should go partners on that dive resort in the Philippines.

How in Hell did Goldwater Country end up with a Clintonista castoff as governor? Easy, too many dimwits from the wrong side of the Continental Divide.

As Chief Sitting Bull once said: "Watch your immigration policies."

Got invaded by Californians fleeing the nightmare they created in LA -- and planning to inflict same on AZ

Still using the same ol' playbook.

How, exactly, does this predominantly affect minorities? Getting an ID is not difficult. You can go to the DMV and get one (Not a driver's liscense, an ID for if you can't get/don't need a driver's liscense). I cannot comprehend the lack of brainpower you would need to believe this pap.
