A 10-month deployment must have been hard on ship and crew. While I oppose this flight out as an unnecessary risk, I must say I'm glad he did it anyway, and I'm glad the crew has been the beneficary of this direct and vivid "Thank You" from the CinC.

Watching GWB land today and his speech tonight, I noticed the crewmen who actually launch the planes and guide them onto the deck are dressed in different colors (purple, red, green, et al). What do those colors mean?

Basically, color coding on a Carrier is...
White=Safety/QA
Red=Ordnance
Purple=Fuels
Green=Aircraft Techs/Catapult and arresting gear techs
Yellow=Aircraft Directors
Blue=Chock and Chainers
Brown=Squadron Plane Captains

There are different variations on the whole color coding system, but this is a general representation of a Carrier flight deck.
