A pickup truck draws them in, but Dixie Chicks turn them off
By Brian Kelly Herald Writer
ABOARD THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN -- Sometimes, the numbers just don't add up.
All throughout America's biggest warship, sailors focused with steely concentration at the task at hand. Against great odds, they hunched over, hoping, waiting, wanting, with great determination, for things to go just so.
It was time again for Big Bucks Bingo.
"I'm going to win," Seaman Cynthia Mendez vowed Monday as she glanced up from the cards in front of her to the in-house television show being broadcast live, from two decks below, in the Lincoln's television studio.
She looked back down at her bingo cards. But her eyes were still on the prize: a brand-new 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.
Not just any truck. A pickup with pizazz. One with a dark gray metallic paint job. One with a Vortec 4300 V6 engine. And don't forget the cruise control, deep-tinted glass, a "sportside" body and gobs of other extras.
"You're going to see me driving the truck away," she said to other sailors in her work area. Mendez thought again, about how she really wanted a Nissan Sentra.
Excerpted for some reason only God knows because this isn't one of the two sue happy papers.
