U.S. Reps Loretta and Linda Sanchez to Spread Anti-Life,
Anti-Women Message at Commencement Ceremonies
Washington, DC - "Mount St. Mary's College may think 'diversity' is a wonderful thing," said American Life League president Judie Brown. "But when it comes to defending the preborn, the Catholic Church demands a zero-tolerance embrace of a single truth. So I find it appalling that even a nominally Catholic school has chosen the pro-abortion Sanchez sisters to address its graduates." Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.), and her sibling, freshman Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), militant supporters of abortion on demand, are scheduled to speak at Mount St. Mary's graduation in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 10. Major pro-abortion groups, including Planned Parenthood and NARAL, back both sisters. Linda Sanchez once worked for the National Organization for Women, a stridently anti-life organization. "You cannot be both Catholic and pro-abortion," said Brown. "These women have built their political careers on a platform that flies in the face of what the Catholic Church teaches on the sanctity of life."
American Life League has sent letters to Jacqueline Powers Doud, the president of Mount St. Mary's, and Cardinal Roger Mahony, the archbishop of Los Angeles, pleading with them to cancel the Sanchez sisters' appearance at the college. "A Catholic college should not allow abortion supporters to have an open platform to spew their anti-life, anti-women views," said Brown. "If Ms. Doud really cared about her students, and if Cardinal Mahony really cared about his flock, they would cancel the Sanchez sisters' commencement speech immediately. If they do not, we will lead a coalition of those willing to protest this despicable act." The coalition led by American Life League includes the Cardinal Newman Society, National Hispanics for Life and Monrovians Against Planned Parenthood.
Because of incidents similar to this one, American Life League has established a watchdog project, The Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church (www.catholiccrusade.com) directed by Joseph Starrs. Through this project, ALL alerts bishops and faithful Catholics to Church-related activities in which pro-abortion spokesmen or viewpoints are presented without regard to the Catholic Church's teaching that abortion is intrinsically immoral and gravely evil. ALL has also named the "Deadly Dozen," 12 pro-abortion U.S. Senators who claim to be Catholic. Plans are underway to name "Deadly Dozens" for the House of Representatives, governors and perhaps individual states. With the recent activities of the Sanchez sisters and Gov. Gray Davis, California may be ripe for the next "Deadly Dozen" campaign. "There are plenty of pro-abortion politicians in California who claim to be Catholic," said Starrs. "Maybe it's time to focus our attention to the Golden State."
