What is Legitimate About the UN?
By Andrew L. Jaffee, 4/29/2003

Just flashing across the wires: The UN "Human Rights Commission" has just voted to give Cuba a seat on the commission?!?! And I keep hearing that we need to engage the UN so that American/coalition actions are lent legitimacy.

Legitimacy? Cuba just recently arrested and jailed 76 political dissidents, and summarily executed three hijackers (whose crime was trying to escape the Caribbean workers' paradise). The so-called Human Rights Commission refused to condemn Cuba's disregard for morality or common decency. They instead decided to send an "observer" to the island. Of course, the great democrat Fidel Castro refused any entry of an observer onto his "turf". And now Cuba has a seat on the commission, so Fidel can be sure the UN doesn't investigate his dictatorship's daily crimes. What's the old saying?: "This is like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse."

Don't forget that the UN also recently put Libya in charge of the commission. Yes, Libya the dictatorship, the supporter of terrorism, the great violator of human rights. In another great snub of all things moral, the UN also has/had Iran and Saddam Hussein's Iraq slated to chair the UN Commission on Disarmament. Yes, Iran and Iraq, two of the world's worst illegal arms proliferators, are/were to watch over world disarmament?!?!

Legitimacy? The UN? More like the "UD" ("United Dictatorships") or "UB" ("United Banana Republics"). Am I in an Orwellian nightmare? Sadly, this is really happening.

Even the generally left-leaning group Human Rights Watch (HRW) opposed Libya's election to chair the commission. They also decried Cuba and Russia holding seats on the commission, both countries they consider to have "very serious human rights problems." HRW concluded that:

The commission has a growing number of members with extremely poor human rights records, who increasingly operate as a bloc to defeat or eviscerate any human rights criticism of individual governments at the commission.

Is this the kind of UN you want your tax dollars going to support? Is this the kind of UN that should be making decisions regarding our entire planet? Voice your concerns to your elected representatives. Ask them to withhold all U.S. funding to the UN until this organization stops supporting dictatorship and hypocrisy:

Tell your representatives what you think.
