VANCOUVER - School teachers in Surrey, B.C., say they may boycott classes after the school board allowed a student to attend classes even though his father is quarantined for SARS.
The school district says it's following the advice of health officials, but teachers say the boy's presence is an unnecessary risk.
The Surrey School District last week cancelled a planned field trip to Toronto because of the WHO travel advisory.
The district said it was being cautious and now the Surrey Teachers Association says the district should be just as cautious when dealing with this student.
A spokeswoman for the district says health officials told them the boy is not a risk to teachers or classmates because his father is only suspected of having SARS.
"The Surrey School District is not a medical authority, so we have to rely on the advice of others to make decisions," said Muriel Wilson.
The teachers say regulations under the B.C. Workers' Compensation Board allow them to stay away if there is a danger in the workplace.
