Am Looking for a Spam Stopper -- Recommendations Pleasd!!
04.28.03 | mlmr

Posted on 04/28/2003 7:37:34 AM PDT by mlmr

I have a mailbox full of spam. I didm't know how badly people want to sell me penis enlargment tool and cheap drugs, gambling. I am also supposed to be overweight and constantly looking for a hot date. Spammers also want me to see things that could be... well... overwhelming.

Sometimes the preview pictures curl my hair as I scramble to delete before the children run into the room.

I have an internet business and do get emails from unknown senders. But the email spam is mixed in. I have three mailboxes that sort into five on my computer. My former consultant suggesed that I read the Feb issue of PC magazine but I am not sure that the items that are recommended will help. I don't want to lose my customer's email.

Have any of you used anti spam software and what would you recommend??

Mailwasher works well for me. Doesn't eliminate it entirely, but it helps.

Any idea if the penis enlargement tool works?

Just kidding - some of the ISPs offer SPAM stoppers, but they are flaky at best and tend to block some valid mail. As soon as they find they are being blocked, spammers tend to change the way their stuff presents itself and they are back in business again. About the only way to ensure you don't get spam would be to set up your email program to "allow only" the senders you wanted to receive from.

I pay for email at http://www.usa.net/netaddress/index.htm and they provide the spam filtering on their side (plus they are Colorado based!). It's about $35 a year but you get free web access to your mail and you can use your favorite mail client as well. Service based spam filtering is better because they aggregate spammers using their entire user base.

Mail Washer is a great tool.

And for those ding dang popups: download StealthRay from http://www.godaddy.com.

It has worked great for me. Has stopped popups in their tracks.

Defintely. You just specify his e-mail address as a "friend".

The free version of Mailwasher has a lot of nice, customizable features.

You didn't mention your email client. Outlook Express has built in spam filtering. You can develop a list of keywords for either the subject line or the body of the message that will send offending mail to the deleted folder. I'm sure that most other email programs have similar features. I have a list of a dozen magic words that take care of 90 percent of the bad stuff. the words aren't always spelled "correctly". You get them from actual emails rather than the dictionary.

I'm not sure how it works but I think Bill Clinton has been using one. He looks much taller than before.

To to: http://www.panicware.com

and get "Popup Stopper."

It's pretty good. I always have it enabled. Sometimes it's a PITB to remember to press the CTRL key for windows I want to popup, but it beats the alternative by a long shot.
