CAMP AS SAYLIYAH, Qatar — An assailant opened fire on two Humvees in downtown Baghdad (search) on Sunday, wounding four U.S. soldiers, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

One of the soldiers' injuries were serious, the statement said, but did not provide further details.

The soldiers were traveling in the Humvees (search), which were stopped in midmorning traffic when an assailant approached and fired at them from a small-caliber weapon, the statement said.

It did not say whether the soldiers returned fire or whether the shooter was apprehended.

The soldiers, who were taken to a combat support hospital, were on a public health mission when the attack took place, the statement said. Their names were being withheld pending notification of family.

No matter how good the exterminator, there are usually some vermin who escape the poisons and hang around to torment you.

Bad news indeed - but likely to continue as it is not possible to determine the bad guys by just looking at them. Sigh...

This is terrible. Think how much worse it would be if we were stuck in a quagmire.

Quagmire? Um, aren't we still in the 4-6 day pause that Reuters told everyone about? I hadn't realized that Baghdad had been taken. The Iraqi Information Minister said so.</sarcasm>

The units in Baghdad according to the latest Army Times are elements of the 3rd Infantry Division, 101st Airborne, and 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

Imagine if the Iraqis really did like Saddam (or hated us enough) to actually put up a fight in the cities...thank God they did not or this isolated scene would have been repeated in each Iraqi city each day.

I'm imagining exactly that. I'm imagining that the Iraqis would be dead, dead, dead now, instead of mounting ambushes.

"The soldiers, who were taken to a combat support hospital, were on a public health mission when the attack took place, the statement said."

Terrorists don't care about public health any more than they care about freedom.

Thank God they survived. I hope they DID return fire and the perp is either dead or in US custody. Was ha another terrorist import to Iraq? Was he a follower of Saddam's regime? Or of finally arrested Saddam mini-me and self declared mayor of Baghdad, Mohammed Mohsen al-Zubaidi? Or all of the above?
